“Whenever a pope is sick,” he said, “there is always a breeze or a hurricane of conclave.”

Francis also commented on some of the latest turmoil within the church.

He defended the church’s handling of abuse by the clergy on minors, saying “there have been very clear steps taken on this”, including the creation of a commission for the protection of minors. and a global meeting in the Vatican to better face an issue that erodes confidence in the institution.

He touched on a more current scandal, a corruption lawsuit that started in July involving a real estate company in London. Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu, once one of the highest prelates in the Vatican, is among the accused. He owns denied the charges.

Corruption must be fought, said the Pope, “but it’s an old story”. He added that the recent restructuring of the Vatican justice system would help to stamp out wrongdoing, as happened in the London real estate case, which began with an internal complaint.

“In addition to the presumption of innocence,” Francis said of Cardinal Becciu, “I want everything to go well. “

Francis also spoke of some of the cornerstones of his papacy, including the need to better integrate the hundreds of thousands migrants who have been forced to leave their countries because of war, poverty and, increasingly, climate change.

“Regarding migrants, four attitudes: welcome, protect, promote and integrate,” he said, adding that the migration crisis should be treated as a global problem and not by country.
