The OkCupid dating service has introduced a way for users to clearly indicate their support for the right to abortion: a “pro-choice” badge that appears prominently in a dating profile.

Melissa Hobley, chief marketing officer for OkCupid, said the feature was created in response to the passage of Senate Bill 8, which made abortion essentially illegal in Texas. (OkCupid’s parent company, Match Group, is headquartered in Dallas.)

The badge, comparable to a virtual bumper sticker, will appear on profiles directly below biographical details – such as name, age, and location – making it immediately visible to anyone who slides. For each profile that adds the badge, OkCupid will donate $ 1 to Planned Parenthood.

In recent years, OkCupid has offered different badges for users to signal their position on various political issues, including a “Black Lives Matter” badge and a “Voter” badge. In May, the company added an “I am vaccinated” badge to its list of identifiers.

The OkCupid Abortion Right Badge was developed after the Supreme Court ruled in early September not to block Texas law that bans most abortions after six weeks and allows citizens to sue anyone who helps a woman. patient to have an abortion. OkCupid users have already gained support for OkCupid users: Between September 2020 and September 2021, the number of users in the United States who wrote “pro-choice” in their bio increased by approximately 18% , the company said.

Sarah Lynn Robinson, 30, a dating coach, was one of those users. After Senate Bill 8 came into effect, she added a line to her OkCupid bio: “pro-woman, pro-choice, those who disagree can get away with it.” “

“I’m friends with people who are a little more conservative than me, or religious and on the fence about abortion, and that’s great,” Robinson said over the phone. “But I think your partner is the only person in your life who should have the same standards and morals. I’d rather be single for the rest of my life than be with a guy who doesn’t support my right to bodily independence.

Increasingly, dating apps like OkCupid allow users to incorporate their political views into their profiles. Bumble offers a filter that sorts people based on their politics, such as whether they see themselves as conservatives or liberals. In a survey, the company found that politics was among the top 10 out of 50 factors women consider in a potential match.

Before the arrival of such features, app users were already creating their own slogans and visual shortcuts to express their political beliefs. The red rose emoji, for example, could be used to indicate affiliation with the Democratic Socialists of America, while a Red Hat on a profile picture could signal his support for former President Donald Trump.

Young Millennials and Generation Z were particularly favorable of the idea that a woman should be able to have an abortion, according to a Gallup poll. These are also the generations most likely to use dating apps.

According to OkCupid, expressing your point of view clearly can improve the chances of making a connection. People who include the words “pro-choice” in their OkCupid profile are almost twice as likely to get a response than others. (The likelihood of a response also increased for profiles with a voter badge.)

Beyond the badge, Match Group announcement in early September that it created a fund to help employees and dependents affected by the law on abortion. Bumble, who is based in Austin, Texas, took a similar step, saying that the company has created a “relief fund to support the reproductive rights of women and people of all genders seeking abortions in Texas.”
