Like others during the pandemic, Olivia Kim, vice president of creative projects at Nordstrom, spent a lot of time looking at dishes and other household items. In her case, it wasn’t just because she was working from home, but also because she was setting up a housewares department.

This department, located on the first and second floors of Nordstrom’s flagship in New York City, opens on Friday and offers a mix of mainstream and smaller brands, with an emphasis on lesser-known names.

New York-based labels are very present, especially Thompson Street Studios and Wooj. There is also a section devoted to the products of the MoMA Design Store, including the colorful pottery of the Copenhagen label Raawii (from $ 72), pastel side tables by Kartell (from $ 165), and Mondrian-inspired neon vases by MoMA’s in-house design team ($ 100).

“We opened the flagship five months before the city closed, and after what has happened over the past 18 months, we felt it was important to support our local manufacturers and be a point anchoring in the community, ”Ms. Kim said.

The store also features creative women, whose stories are summarized on shelf signs. Great Jones, a kitchen utensil company founded by Sierra Tishgart in New York City, makes its first retail landing here, with a red Dutch oven made exclusively for Nordstrom ($ 155).

Beverly’s, a pop-up for the home and the kitchen from the Lower East Side and created by fashion designer Beverly Nguyen, is setting up in a wide street corner. Casa Shop, a jewelry and home decor boutique in Richmond, Virginia, has a wall of delicate and colorful vases, martini glasses and other glasses, both vintage and new.

As part of the social justice movement known as the 15 Percent Pledge, black-owned brands including Harlem Candle Co., Goodee and Estelle Glassware are also featured. “We wanted to show the diversity of the creative community that we have cultivated,” Ms. Kim said.

While the lower floor emphasizes design elements, the upper floor is more practical. Bedding from millennial favorites like Citizenry, Boll & Branch, and Casper nestle alongside Bearaby’s weighted blankets. There is a section for Dyson vacuums and air purifiers, Vitamix blenders and Moccamaster coffee makers. A kitchenette is tucked into one corner, so expect to see cooking demonstrations and other in-store events.

Designer candles generously dot the space, made by Other country ($ 36), Mala la Marque (from $ 30) and Better World Fragrance House, launched by Drake (from $ 48).

One thing you won’t find? Great furniture. While there are side tables ($ 450) and chairs by artist Mark Hundley ($ 550) and a green Memphis Milano floor lamp ($ 3,500), most items fit in a shopping bag. . (And no, terrazzo tables displaying the wares are not for sale.)

While the store caters to New Yorkers, Nordstrom also knows that plenty of tourists will come to check it out, which is why the entrance has a kiosk stocked with memorabilia, all priced at $ 15. or less. Unsurprisingly, everything is New York themed.
