Zack Scott, the Mets’ acting general manager, was found asleep at the wheel of a car early Tuesday morning in White Plains, NY and was arrested for drunk driving, police said.

Captain James Spencer of the White Plains Police Department said an officer spotted Scott asleep driving a 2018 Toyota Highlander at the intersection of Fisher and South Lexington avenues. Spencer said Scott, 44, refused to take a breathalyzer but failed a field field sobriety test.

Scott was arrested at 4:17 a.m. and was booked and released shortly thereafter, Spencer said.

The Mets said in A declaration Wednesday afternoon that they were “surprised and deeply disappointed to learn this morning of the existence of an alleged DUI involving Zack Scott” and that they took the matter “very seriously”.

Scott will not be accompanying the team on their next trip to Washington and Miami, the Mets said, “while we learn more and determine next steps.”

Scott did not immediately return messages requesting comment. The arrest was first reported by the New York Post.

On the night of his arrest, Scott was in Greenwich, Connecticut, at the home of Mets owner Steven Cohen, who was organizing a fundraiser for the team’s charity in which players and officials from the ‘team were present. The event, according to a team official, took place at 9 p.m. Scott, authorities said, was found asleep while driving elsewhere several hours later.

Scott was promoted to interim general manager of the Mets only because the team fired his full-time general manager, Jared Porter, in January in the wake of Porter revealing obscene harassment of a reporter four and a half years ago while with the Chicago Cubs. Porter’s dismissal came just a month after he was hired from the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Following a Major League Baseball investigation, Porter was placed on the league’s ineligible list in June until at least the end of the 2022 season.

Scott was Porter’s finalist for the role of general manager of the Mets in December. Still, the Mets hired Scott, who had spent the previous 17 years with the Boston Red Sox, including terms as senior vice president and assistant general manager.

Scott’s arrest was the latest high-profile episode of the Mets, an organization apparently struggling with constant problems on and off the pitch. After the shots punching instructor Ryan Ellis and Porter following complaints of sexual harassment, the Mets hired a law firm to investigate the team’s culture. In June, Cohen announced new guidelines to tackle a workplace that some believe encourages sexist and bullying behavior.

On the court, the Mets have struggled, dropping from No. 1 in the National Eastern League to No. 3 in less than a month, and are now battling to even reach the playoffs. At 65-67, they were five and a half games away from second-place NL wildcard on Wednesday.

In early August, as the Mets began to drop in the standings – a stretch Scott called “unacceptably bad” – he also suggested injured players were not taking care of themselves.

“They are all individuals and control their own bodies and sometimes they are not as compliant as they should be”, Scott told reporters so. “You also need to take charge of your career and your health. “

Kevin Draper and David Waldstein contributed reports.
