Linda Evangelista, the model who rose to fame in the 1990s, said she became “brutally disfigured” and “unrecognizable” after a cosmetic body sculpting procedure that turned her into a recluse.

In an Instagram post on Wednesday, she evoked the filing of a complaint, affirming that she was taking “a big step towards repairing a wrong that I suffered and that I kept to myself for more than five years”.

She added: “To my subscribers who wondered why I wasn’t working when my peers’ careers were flourishing, the reason is that I was brutally disfigured by Zeltiq’s CoolSculpting procedure which did the opposite of what she had promised. “

Ms Evangelista, 56, said that after the fat freezing procedure, she developed paradoxical fat hyperplasia, a side effect in which patients develop firm tissue masses in the treatment areas.

She said the cosmetic procedure had left her “permanently deformed even after undergoing two painful and unsuccessful corrective surgeries.” She said she had not been made aware of the risk.

“PAH not only destroyed my livelihood, it put me in a cycle of deep depression, deep sadness and the lowest level of self-loathing,” she wrote. “In the process, I became a recluse. “

Ms Evangelista, who was known as one of the Top Five Models in the 1990s, detailed her story on Instagram, where she has 912,000 followers and thousands of people have commented or expressed support. Its story has also been widely covered by international and national media.

Ms. Evangelista filed a lawsuit Tuesday against Zeltiq Aesthetics Inc. in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. The lawsuit said she was seeking compensatory damages of $ 50 million for her distress and loss of work, promotions and public appearances.

Company officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Thursday. An attorney for Ms Evangelista was not immediately available for comment.

The lawsuit said Ms Evangelista underwent seven treatments from August 2015 to February 2016 to break down fat cells in her abdomen, flanks, back and bra, inner thighs and chin . Within months, she developed “hard, bulging, painful lumps under her skin in these areas,” he said, and was diagnosed with PAH in June 2016.

The record says her quality of life, career and body “were all ruined in 2016 after she was permanently disfigured” by the procedure and the multiple attempts at corrective surgery that followed.

“Ms. Evangelista enjoyed an extremely successful and lucrative modeling career from 1984 to 2016, until she was permanently injured and disfigured by Zeltiq’s CoolSculpting System,” the lawsuit said.

The lawsuit accused the company of “intentionally covering up” the risks or “failing to adequately warn” about them, and said Ms. Evangelista had developed depression and a fear of going out.

Ms Evangelista underwent full-body liposuction after a doctor’s diagnosis referred to her by Zeltiq in 2016 and 2017, but the procedures failed and left scars, according to the lawsuit.

“Ms. Evangelista was promised a more streamlined appearance; instead, the target fat cells actually increased in number and size and formed hard, bulging masses under her skin,” he said. .

According to CoolSculpting, its procedure has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of visible fatty swellings.

In response to questions, the FDA said in an email that it could not comment on the disputes, but was “committed to ensuring that medical devices are safe and effective and that patients can be fully informed when ‘they make personal health decisions’. He said he was monitoring consumer reports of adverse events after a device was released to the market and would “take action where appropriate.”

Cryolipolysis, the name for the nonsurgical fat freezing procedure, uses cold temperature to break down fat cells, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

It is mainly used by patients who want to reduce specific fat swelling which they have not been able to reduce by other means. Generally, the affected area is “sucked” into the hollow of an applicator, where it is subjected to a cold temperature.

The Society of Surgeons said the complication rate was low, with less than 1% of patients possibly developing paradoxical fatty hyperplasia, which represents an unexpected increase in the number of fat cells. The side effect is more common in men than in women, the company said.

Ms Evangelista also said that the public scrutiny of her appearance hurt her emotionally. “I remained, as the media described it, ‘unrecognizable’,” she said.
