New York City Public Schools are reopening at a time when some schools in other states are already several weeks away from in-person instruction. Some districts appear to be doing well, but others are struggling with massive epidemics, hospitalizations and several reported deaths.

Data shows that the reopening of schools tend to do well in areas with high vaccination rates.

San Francisco County in California has a 79 percent vaccination rate for those 12 and over, and his Department of Health reported last Thursday that there had been no epidemics at school since the resumption of classes on August 16. Since the start of the pandemic, only 13 children in the region have been hospitalized.

It bodes well for New York, where 70 percent of those 12 and over are vaccinated, although some neighborhoods have late rates.

The picture is very different in areas where vaccination rates are lower. Hillsborough County Schools, in the Tampa, Florida area where 58 percent of those 12 and over have been fully vaccinated, isolated or quarantined 8,000 of its students after a mass epidemic last month. Florida schools face a particular set of challenges, as Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican, is adamantly opposed to vaccination and mask mandates, and the state Department of Education has withheld funds from at least two school districts which made masks compulsory in schools.

In Georgia, the Griffin-Spalding County School District, outside of Atlanta, abruptly closed its classrooms temporarily after the death of two bus drivers and a bus supervisor after contracting Covid-19 after the school reopened on August 4, according to its superintendent, Keith Simmons. Mr Simmons said parents were “frustrated” by the short notice.

“We weren’t able to give them advance notice,” Mr. Simmons said. “We made the announcement on a statutory holiday, and the parents may not have had enough time to provide care for the children.”

Other southern states with vaccination rates below the national average – including Kentucky and Mississippi – are also reporting school outbreaks.
