Democratic House leaders introduced Tuesday one highly anticipated package of proposed new limits on executive power, launching a post-Trump push to tighten controls over the presidency that they hope will compare to the overhauls that followed the Watergate scandal and the Vietnam War.

Democratic lawmakers have negotiated with Biden’s White House to refine their wide range of proposals, which amounts to a point-by-point reprimand for how President Donald J. Trump has flouted the standards.

The bill, called the Protecting Our Democracy Act, would ensure that more difficult for presidents to take a series of actionsincluding offering or granting pardons in situations which raise suspicions of corruption; refuse to respond to subpoenas; secretly spending or freezing funds unlike Congressional appropriations; dismiss inspectors general or retaliate against whistleblowers; and receive “emoluments” or payments during the performance of his duties, including in connection with commercial transactions.

TO a press conference On Tuesday, California President Nancy Pelosi said executive power has been increasing steadily for years, but threats to the separation of powers system “have intensified seriously” under the Trump administration. She described the bill as an “inoculation” against future abuses of presidential authority.

Ms Pelosi had asked Democrats to compile various bills containing ideas for restrictions in the package, which is mainly sponsored by Representative Adam Schiff, Democrat of California.

The two appeared at an event with lawmakers who chair several committees that contributed pieces, including two representatives from New York, Jerrold Nadler of the Judiciary Committee and Carolyn Maloney of the Oversight Committee, and Representative John Yarmuth of Kentucky. , chairman of the budget committee.

Ms Pelosi has not announced any timeline for when the bill could be introduced, although Mr Schiff has said he hopes the House will pass the package “this fall”.

He would face headwinds in the Senate, where he would need the support of at least 10 Republicans to get him to vote. There, supporters say, the package is likely to be broken into pieces that will be attached to other bills.
