The House narrowly approved a move to enact abortion rights into federal law on Friday, as Democrats sought to counter state-level efforts to curb abortions and growing hostility to abortion rights. abortion by the conservative Supreme Court.

Acting after the High Court refused to block Texas’ tough new abortion limits, lawmakers voted 218 to 211 to send the Women’s Health Protection Act to the Senate, where it is unlikely to pass. New York Democrat and Majority Leader Senator Chuck Schumer is expected to announce, however, that he will introduce the measure in the near future.

The Democratic authors of the measure called the vote historic, given what they described as growing threats to the Roe v. Wade of 1973 establishing a right to abortion. They presented it as a stern rebuke to the Supreme Court for allowing the Texas law prohibits most abortions after six weeks enter into force earlier this month.

“If the judges over there in this building don’t act, this House of Representatives will act,” said Representative Diana DeGette, Colorado Democrat and long-time abortion rights supporter.

President Nancy Pelosi, who called for the measure to be reviewed soon after the Texas ruling, lambasted the court for failing to intervene to block the new law, arguing she ignored 50 years of abortion precedent .

“When this court passed this shameful Texas law, it shamed the United States Supreme Court,” she said before the vote. “What were they thinking, or were they thinking, or were they just validating what they had been sent to court for?

Republicans have consistently opposed the measure, which they called extreme and would lead to abortions at all stages of pregnancy and overturn hundreds of state laws. They said the measure goes way beyond Roe’s codification and should more appropriately be called the “abortion on demand until birth law”.

“This demand abortion bill would destroy the future of our country,” said Rep. Jackie Walorski, Republican of Indiana. “A child in the womb is a living person, and yet my colleagues across the way remain obsessed with killing unborn babies in the name of empowering women.”

“This will override any modest pro-life restrictions ever enacted by states,” said Rep. Chris Smith, Republican of New Jersey. “This bill poses an existential threat to unborn babies. “

Democrats said the measure was urgently needed as the Supreme Court would later review a Mississippi law later this year that abortion rights activists say could lead to further erosion of Roe v. Wade, or its outright cancellation.

In the Senate, Mr Schumer had previously made no commitment to allow a vote on the measure, which would almost certainly be blocked by Republican obstruction. The Democratic leader has been hesitant to force the Senate votes to 50-50 on measures that do not have a minimum of 50 votes, and at least two Democrats have not approved the House bill.
