The governor of Pennsylvania said Tuesday his administration was imposing a statewide mask requirement in all schools, becoming the latest governor to adopt a politically charged but federally recommended precaution.

Masks will be required for teachers, staff, and visitors to public and private schools, early learning programs and child care centers in Pennsylvania starting September 7. The warrant was imposed by order of Secretary of State for Health Alison Beam, who appeared at a press conference with Governor Tom Wolf, a Democrat.

“Wearing a mask at school is necessary to keep our children in class and to prevent Covid from entering,” Mr Wolf said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended masks be worn for everyone inside a school, regardless of immunization status, to protect students for in-person schooling. Additional safety measures are especially important in schools because no coronavirus vaccine has been authorized by the federal government for children under the age of 12, federal health officials said.

Republican politicians across the country say imposing mask requirements undermines individual freedoms, and many states with Republican governors, including Florida and Texas, have fought district mask warrants schools and localities.

Some districts have instituted mask warrants anyway, leading to legal battles. The US Department of Education announced on Monday that it was starting investigation to find out whether mandatory mask bans in five states violated civil rights laws that protect students with disabilities.

States with Democratic governors, including California, New York and Louisiana, have adopted universal mask mandates in schools, as has the Republican governor of Massachusetts. Data collected by the New York Times indicates that Pennsylvania is the 16th state to order a statewide school mask warrant.

Pennsylvania is doing better than many states in the latest wave of infections, but the state has still seen a significant increase in reported cases, hospitalizations and deaths, according to data collected by the Times.

Mr Wolf, a Democratic governor who has to work with a Republican-controlled legislature, said earlier this summer that he believes school districts are best to choose their own measures to protect students and staff.

But on Tuesday, Mr Wolf said the rapid spread of the Delta variant, numerous demands from his constituents and a spike in cases, especially among children, had changed his mind.

This reversal was not acceptable to the pro tempore President of the Pennsylvania Senate, Jake Corman, a Republican, who declared “that it is completely fallacious for him to do an about-face now when he does not like choices made by school districts ”in a statement released Tuesday. .

“Our stance throughout the pandemic has been consistent – we believe in local control,” Corman added. “School districts are in the best position to make decisions about the health and safety of students, and they should be empowered to make those choices.”

Mr Wolf said it was more important to protect people in schools.

“We have to put politics aside,” Wolf said. “We need to get back to what matters: keeping students safe and keeping students in the classroom. “
