Jimmy Greaves, one of the greatest goalscorers in English football, has died. He was 81 years old.

Tottenham Hotspur, where he played for nine years, announced his death on Sunday but did not say where he died or cite the cause.

Greaves suffered a minor stroke in 2012. His family thought he had made a full recovery, but he had a more serious stroke in 2015.

A versatile striker with skill with both head and two feet, Greaves has scored 44 goals in just 57 appearances for England.

But even though he was the first player to be the leading scorer in the English league for three consecutive seasons, he is perhaps best known for one game he missed: the World Cup final.

Greaves was England’s star striker before the 1966 home tournament. But he was injured in a first-round match against France and gave way to the roster to Geoff Hurst.

Hurst scored the only goal in England’s quarter-final victory over Argentina and retained his place in the squad at the expense of Greaves. Hurst gained lasting fame by scoring the first hat trick in a World Cup final; Greaves remained unmoved on the bench as England celebrated their 4-2 victory over West Germany at the final whistle.

Substitutions were not allowed at the time and team members did not receive medals, as they have done in World Cups since 1974. A fan-led campaign led to the presentation of medals to Greaves and 10 other members of the team, known as “the forgotten ones”. hero ”in 2009. Greaves sold his 18-karat medal at auction in 2014 for £ 44,000 (approximately $ 60,000).

“It was devastating for me not to make the final,” said Greaves in 2009. “I always believed we were going to win the World Cup and that I would be in it, but I wasn’t. not.”

James Peter Greaves was born February 20, 1940 in East London. He started playing for Chelsea at the age of 17.

At 20 years and 290 days old, he became the youngest player to score 100 goals in the English football league. He scored 41 times, a club record, during the 1960-61 season to secure a lucrative transfer to AC Milan.

He has scored nine goals in 12 games for Milan but has not moved to Italy, instead ending his brief stint to return to London with Tottenham, where he will spend the next nine years and score 266 goals in 380 games, a club record.

Tottenham manager Bill Nicholson paid Greaves £ 99,999 – to spare him the pressure, he said, of being England’s first 100,000 pound player.

The move apparently worked: Greaves scored a hat trick in their opener, a 5-2 win over Blackpool and helped Tottenham hold onto the Football Association Cup.

In 1963, he scored twice in a 5-1 win over Atletico Madrid in the European Cup Winners’ Cup, a victory that made Tottenham the first British team to win a European trophy. He was the Premier League’s top scorer – a feat he would repeat in 1964, 1965 and 1969.

Greaves moved to West Ham in 1970, traded for his former England teammate Martin Peters. He retired at the end of the season with a record total of 357 goals in 516 league appearances.

He made a brief comeback for non-league club Barnet in 1978, but soon quit and went on television. He was the anchor of the longtime Saturday show “Saint and Greavsie” in Britain with former Liverpool player Ian St. John.

Information on the survivors was not immediately available.
