You’ve had decades of careers where you’ve kind of shied away from playing the characters of wife, mother, and girlfriend. Edie you played Carmela Soprano, one of the most famous wives on television, but she’s a character with total interiority. So how did you do it?

BROWN If you are a certain type of person, you are not actually offered these particular roles. They knew you weren’t going to obey.

FALCO Until I was 40, I was neither a wife nor a mother. It left me with many years of work where I was always asked to imagine my path to roles that just didn’t resonate with me. I like people to think that we are making choices about what roles to play and what not. I went to where the work was.

IRELAND I am still not a wife or a mother. Maybe never. Who knows? I definitely made the choice not to tackle a lot of these parts. Because I had no connection with them. Sometimes I had to argue with the agents, because I was like, I’m not going to go into this. I’m not your girlfriend if you tell a story about a mother and her child. I’m not gonna be as good as someone else.

How did you avoid playing strictly sympathetic characters?

BROWN I was called to California. There was a system where they put you on all these TV shows, “Marcus Welby, MD” and “The Rockford Files”. The settings were so narrow, because you had to be so beautiful all the time. The way I got by was actually taking a Valium every morning when I went to work. I returned to New York.

FALCO I need to like it, at least a little. Or I need to understand why she made the choices she made. What is behind it all is people’s desire to connect, to be happy, not to suffer. If you can get there at some visceral level, people tend to come for the ride.

IRELAND If we put the ugly parts of ourselves out, then other people who see it won’t feel that those ugly parts are their private shame. They’ll say, ‘Oh, okay, everyone’s like that.’ It’s a liberating thing to show people – the ugly stuff, the ugly stuff. And there is nothing to be ashamed of. That’s part of the reason the three of us ended up in this room.
