American presidents face tough decisions, and we are inclined to support them when they do so abroad in the national interest. But President Biden’s provocative and accusatory defense on Tuesday of his withdrawal from Afghanistan and his execution was so dishonest, and so devoid of self-reflection or responsibility, that it was unworthy of the sacrifices Americans have made in this conflict. .

The charitable interpretation is that this is what Mr. Biden truly believes about Afghanistan in particular, the war in general, and how to defend the United States. about it, blame everyone and pretend that the defeat is really a victory. Neither is reassuring about Mr. Biden’s character, his judgment or, more worryingly, the three and a half long years remaining in his presidency.

Start with dishonesty, although we only have room to cover up some of the lies. Mr Biden again claimed he was crippled by Donald Trump’s bad deal with the Taliban.

Mr. Trump’s deal was rotten, but as the new president he could have changed it because he has so many other things that Mr. Trump has done. The Trump deal was based on the Taliban meeting conditions, such as negotiating a deal with the Afghan government, which they had already broken when Mr. Biden became president. Yet Mr Biden says he was both a prisoner of the deal and courageous in sticking to it.

He also reiterated that his only choices were a total withdrawal or an “escalation” with thousands of troops. His own advisers offered him alternatives, just like the Afghanistan Task Force. He was so determined to withdraw, and so quickly, that he refused to adjust the military plan even as the Taliban advanced and the CIA warned that the Afghan government was likely to fall.
