He had heard his assistant coaches talk about their core philosophies in job interviews and previous meetings. This time, he decided, he wanted them to detail and defend their views in front of the staff, with their views potentially being challenged and disassembled. The sessions last a long time. Invited Friday to summarize his approach, Kevin Wilson, the offensive coordinator, responded with a monologue of nearly 700 words.

But Wilson said the pre-spring training drill had forced him to think about his drills and consider any “ruts” he might have fallen into as a coach. He also urged his players to take note of themselves and identify the fundamentals they wanted to improve for 2021. The result was a consistent focus on the building blocks of the game Day was looking for.

“I think at the end of last year we felt we had worked hard and kept on working,” said Wilson, a former head coach from Indiana. “But we thought that we were so lacking in fundamentals and that we were going to be young enough to have an impact on the season, we had to stress that more than ever.”

The coaches introduced the approach to the players, who eagerly accepted.

Despite their accomplishments, the Ohio State players had viewed the emphasis on getting back to basics as an avenue for improvement throughout the season, said linebacker Steele Chambers.

“Everyone you play, especially with our schedule, is going to have great athletes, great talent on the other side,” said Chambers, who was previously a running back for the Buckeyes. “It’s the little things like the fundamentals that can really give us an advantage. “

Day said he expected to evaluate the approach in mid-October, when Ohio State has a week off, to think about how to train the fundamentals during the season.

He knows his team could be different: By then, the Buckeyes should have played more games than they did in the entire 2020 regular season.
