President Biden adopted Gov. Gavin Newsom’s political tactics in this week’s recall election during a trip to California on Monday – tying the leading Republican candidate, right-wing radio host Larry Elder, to Donald Trump.

“You all know last year I had to fight the real Donald Trump,” Biden said at a rally in Long Beach, running a hand over his blue blazer and tie-less shirt. to underline the sign of the cross. “Well, this year’s leading Republican gubernatorial candidate is the closest thing to a Trump clone I’ve ever seen in your state.”

Earlier in Mr. Biden’s tenure, when his approval ratings were high, he tried to avoid even mumbling his predecessor’s name, referring to him, comically, as “the old guy.” . But now, after declining public approval following the disorderly pullout from Afghanistan, the president is backtracking on the unvarnished anti-Trump message that helped him get elected in 2020.

It’s a message Democratic congressional candidates should hammer home at midway through 2022 – that they are, for all their flaws, the only ones standing between a comeback from Trump and his cronies.

“He’s the Donald Trump clone,” Biden said of Mr. Elder. “Can you imagine him being governor of this state?” You cannot let this happen.

It didn’t take long for Mr. Trump to intervene; he released a statement on Tuesday that criticized Newsom’s water management policies and returned to a familiar theme: the election is rigged.

At the same time, however, he predicted a victory for Newsom.

“People don’t realize that despite the rigged vote in California (I call it the ‘spin-off ballots’), I got 1.5 million more votes in 2020 than in 2016,” he said. Mr Trump said. “The place is so rigged, however, that a guy who can’t even bring water in their state, that I got federal approval to do (that’s the hard part), will probably win.
