President Biden on Thursday amplified calls for states to take more aggressive action to keep children in school amid rising coronavirus cases, calling on governors to demand vaccinations for all employees schools and districts to implement more regular testing.

In the latest iteration of the White House plan to fight the coronavirus pandemic, the administration will also require that teachers and other employees of schools operated by federal agencies be vaccinated as part of its vast push to get federal labor protected.

This requirement would apply to those teaching in Head Start programs, Department of Defense schools, and schools operated by the Bureau of Indian Education. Collectively, these schools accommodate more than a million children and employ nearly 300,000 people, according to the plan published by administration officials.

In remarks Thursday night, in which Mr Biden sold his plan to a divided American public over vaccines, he also made passionate appeals to populations beyond his control: he implored parents to get their children vaccinated eligible ages 12 and older; and state leaders to help increase the 90 percent of the nation’s teaching force that would be 100 percent vaccinated.

“Vaccination requirements in schools are not new,” he said. “They work.”

Mr Biden’s plan comes as the start of the school year coincides with the coronavirus the number of cases among the country’s children reaches alarming rates. The country has recorded more cases of the coronavirus in children over the past week than at any time during the pandemic, and the number of children admitted to hospital with Covid-19 reached the highest levels reported to date.

According to the White House, more than half of the country’s eligible children have been vaccinated, and studies have shown that child hospitalization rates in less-vaccinated states are nearly four times higher than in high-rate states. high vaccination rate. Currently, nine states as well as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico have vaccination requirements for staff at K-12 schools, administration officials said.

The administration also called on all schools to continue tapping into billions of dollars in funding allocated to mitigation measures recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, including increasing regular testing in schools for students. , teachers and staff.

The two leaders of the country’s most powerful teachers’ unions have expressed support for Mr Biden’s new plan.

Becky Pringle, president of the National Education Association, said the organization “strongly supports” Mr. Biden’s call for state immunization requirements for all educators. “Educators remain committed to working together to ensure that our local schools are the safest places in the community for every student, educator and family,” Ms. Pringle said in a statement.

“If we really want to put Covid-19 behind us, we have to embrace scientifically proven methods to keep this virus at bay: masking, testing, vaccinations and ventilation,” said Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers.
