Ben Platt isn't the oldest adult to play a teenager onscreen

Can a mop of curly hair, a backpack and an outfit that looks like a mom’s choice for school photo day send a 27-year-old actor back into his senior year of high school?

That’ll be the question moviegoers face when Ben Platt returns to his performance as the titular goofy teenager in the film adaptation of the heartbreaking Broadway musical “Dear Evan Hansen», Expected September 24 in theaters.

When the first trailer came out in May, the first reactions to Platt’s attempt to shave a decade were, well, less than rosy.

“Raise your hand if you personally feel like a victim of Ben Platt’s wig this morning”, writer Jorge Molina tweeted, prompting comparisons with stage thief wig Sarah Paulson wore in “The People c. OJ Simpson. “

But that part of her look, at least, was the real thing. Platt set the record straight in a now-deleted Twitter post. “I am very flattered that people think my locks are a wig and I hate popping bubbles,” he wrote. “But unfortunately, they are mine.”

Platt isn’t the first adult adult to return to his locker and letter jacket days for a movie, and far from the oldest, though some of them – * cough * Tobey Maguire – seem to have to. carry briefcases instead of backpacks. (Child labor laws make it easier for actors over 18 to choose as high school students than to circumvent regulations for young actors.)

Here are some of the 20’s and 30’s most memorable attempts to make it through their teens. Who succeeds and who should have given up?

Danny’s Age: 18

Age of John Travolta: 23

Travolta’s not-so-malevolent gang boss might look a few years older than the “he was nice, he just turned 18” that Sandy ties him up to, but it works because he’s a young person compared to other “high school students” around him. Olivia Newton-John was 29 years old; show thief Stockard Channing, at 33, was old enough to play Rizzo’s mother. “Fat” (1978) became the highest-grossing musical film so far, so audiences clearly weren’t too worried – and Travolta’s schoolboy cheering for Newton-John in that tight black bodysuit seemed way too real.

Elinor’s age: 19

Emma Thompson’s Age: 36

If you remember that the character of Thompson is supposed to be 19 years old in the Jane Austen novel about which the 1995 movie is based, her matriarchal and mistress of herself Elinor won’t fool you for a second. Kate Winslet, who was 20 when she played 16-year-old Elinor’s sister Marianne, points out the divide. But if it’s been a while since you’ve read the novel and you’re just assuming Elinor is in her late twenties or early thirties, you could give Thompson a passing grade. After all, her intelligence and her frequent apologies on behalf of devotees, although reckless, Marianne make her closer to a mother than a sister.

Cameron’s Age: 17

Age of Alan Ruck: 29

Actors pushing 30 don’t have a good track record of pulling out 17-year-olds, and Ruck, though he imbues Cameron with perfect humor and sensibility as a Ferris winger, is no exception. Matthew Broderick, who plays Ferris, helped distract from the real discrepancy – he was 24 when the 1986 movie was released – but not enough to sell the subterfuge. Fortunately, this was a case where the movie was so good that no one seemed to care.

Age of Myrtle: 14

Age of Shirley Henderson: 37

All hail the power of mats! (And a 5-foot stature.) Is it scary, in retrospect, for a grown woman to play a 14-year-old giggling ghost flirting with prepubescent Daniel Radcliffe in “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets“(2002)? Sure. (It would be quite strange to have a real 14-year-old girl playing Myrtle, who would have been in her sixties if she hadn’t had a fateful encounter with a basilisk.) But honestly, watching the movie when I was young, I would never have guessed that she was old enough to be Harry’s mother.

Stone Age : 17

Age of Tobey Maguire: 27

Maguire, unfortunately, is about as good at posing as a teenager as Peter Parker at concealing his identity as the main character in “Spider Man”(2002). When his character is bitten by a radioactive spider on a school trip to Columbia University, the actor looks more like a teaching assistant in a lab than a high school student. But he’s far from the only (relatively) Peter Parker on top of the hill, though things changed in 2015 when a 19-year-old Tom Holland was thrown as Marvel’s new Spider-Man.

Holly’s age: 19

Age of Audrey Hepburn: 31

Sure, Hepburn’s doe eyes and elven features shaved years off her appearance, but she was clearly a woman in the 1961 movie based on the novel by Truman Capote. (Although Condom’s first choice for Holly, then 35-year-old Marilyn Monroe was even older.) Yet Hepburn embodies the striking, self-sufficient young bohemian of the novel, and Holly’s free spirit is also alive in her than in a recent high school graduate – although she never looks like it in her sleek, sophisticated black dress.

Baby’s age: 17

Jennifer Gray Age: 27

No one puts Baby in a corner, and no one was about to tell Gray that she was ten years too old to play the Doctor’s Daughter. that gets tangled up with Patrick Swayze’s bad-boy dance teacher in “Dirty dance(1987). It helped that Swayze, who played Johnny Castle, 25, was 34 at the time, but Grey’s short stature (she is 5ft 3in), wild curls and big brown eyes made her quite believable that she was 17.

Regina’s age: 16 or 17

Rachel McAdams Age: 26

Make you do you want to call Regina George of McAdams an impostor? Mark Waters, the director of “Bad girls”(2004), initially passed on McAdams for the part because he didn’t think she could get away with a teenage girl, but then he decided it would make sense if Regina grew a little too fast. Our take: While Regina looks more like a guard for a sorority than a school lunch table, it works for a complicit character who is always a few steps ahead of her classmates.
