Anthony Romero, the executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union, said on Monday he regretted that a Tweeter recently sent by his organization changed the words of a well-known quote from late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

The ACLU tweet, which was sent on September 18, changed Judge Ginsburg’s words, replacing each of her references to women with “person,” “persons,” or a plural pronoun in parentheses. Justice Ginsburg, who died last year, is a revered figure in liberal and feminist circles and led the ACLU’s women’s rights project from its founding in 1972 until she became a federal judge in 1980 .

The ACLU tweet sparked mockery and some anger on social media from feminists and others.

“We will not change people’s quotes,” Romero said in an interview Monday night. “It was a mistake by the digital team. Changing the quotes isn’t something we’ve ever done.

Mr. Romero first expressed his regret by an interview with Michelle Goldberg, columnist for the New York Times, who wrote a column about the danger of trying to “change the nature of reality through language alone.”

Justice Ginsburg underwent Senate confirmation hearings for the Supreme Court in 1993. When asked where she stood on reproductive rights, she was unequivocal.

“The decision to have or not to have a child is central to a woman’s life, her well-being and her dignity,” she said. “It’s a decision she has to make on her own. When the government controls that decision for her, she is treated as less than a fully adult human responsible for her own choices.

The ACLU put it this way: “The decision to have or not have a child is at the heart of a [person’s] life at [their] well-being and dignity… When the government controls this decision to [people], [they are] be treated as less than a fully adult human being responsible for [their] own choices.

Mr Romero recently spoke about the cacophony of liberal and left-wing views that occasionally pervades ACLU social media feeds and occasionally requires correction. While he vowed the ACLU would not repeat that mistake, he insisted it “was not a thoughtless mistake.” There are people who are pregnant and request abortions, he said, who do not identify as women.

“My colleagues are doing a fantastic job of trying to understand a reality that people who request abortions are not just women,” he said. “This reality exists.

The ACLU, he said, could have addressed this emerging reality, one that involves identity, gender and language, without altering Justice Ginsburg’s quote. “In America today,” he said, “sometimes the language has to be rethought.
