Justin Cooke and Erik Wallin couldn’t get married without showing their 194 guests a tour of Brooklyn. It wasn’t a long hike, only about a mile along St. Ann’s Brooklyn Heights promenade and Holy Trinity Church, the site of their wedding ceremony, at St. Ann’s Warehouse, the arts center. of the stage in Dumbo. But it was crucial, the couple realized, that their August 28 nuptials showcase the town where they met and build a house, especially in the middle. the pandemic.

After getting engaged in 2019 at Mr. Wallin’s brother’s house in Winnetka, Ill., Over Christmas, they were initially “agnostic” about where to hold the event. Mr. Cooke’s home state of Kentucky was a candidate; Minnesota, where Mr. Wallin grew up, was another; and upstate New York was a solid third option. However, it didn’t take long for Brooklyn to clinch pole position.

“The more we looked for locations, the more I was like, ‘Ah, these are just places like they don’t mean anything to us,’” said Mr. Wallin, general manager of St. Ann’s Warehouse. “Wanting to celebrate our life together and the start of a new chapter in our life together in places that suddenly felt important to us was at the center of it all for me.” For the most part, these places were clustered in New York.

Mr. Wallin and Mr. Cooke, partners in the New York office of the law firm Allen & Overy, met in May 2015 through mutual friends during a Saturday night outing to Manhattan. Even though professional commitments made dating difficult at first, they persevered and by the end of the summer they knew their bond was special and they wanted to develop it further.

“One Sunday night at Fire Island, when most of the people we knew had packed their bags and headed back to town, we hung out with rosé on the roof and, to my memory, we more or less said, ‘ Let’s give that a solid try to really focus on dating and make it exclusive, ”recalled Mr. Cooke, 44, a law graduate from New York University Law School.

From there, the relationship developed organically. A little over a year later, Mr. Wallin, 40, a graduate of St. Olaf College in Minnesota, moved in with Mr. Cooke before purchasing an apartment together in Brooklyn in May 2017. Their rescue dog , Beau, followed in 2018. When they reflected on how much they had been through together for nearly five years, and how much they had ever built in New York City, they knew there was was no better place for them to make their union permanent.

Another important consideration was the introduction of their large number of out-of-town visitors – some of whom had yet to set foot in Brooklyn – into their community. For the couple, there are perhaps no better examples of New York’s charms than the areas they have chosen for their procession. “It turns out that these are some of the most cinematic and amazing places in the world – these beautiful streets in Brooklyn Heights, this beautiful church, the boardwalk, the boardwalk that goes down into Brooklyn Bridge Park,” said Mr. Wallin.

Their decision to take a walk was justified by the beautiful weather that day and the wedding ceremony, which was performed by the Rev. Canon John E. Denaro, an episcopal priest. The weather was overcast and the temperature was in the mid 70’s which was a nice surprise considering the heat from August until then. The oldest guest on the ride was 90 and the youngest, carted away in a stroller, had yet to celebrate his first birthday.
