that of Joël Coen “The Tragedy of Macbeth” isn’t the only Shakespeare at this year’s New York Film Festival. In “Sycorax”, named after Caliban’s mother in “The Tempest”, Argentinian filmmaker Matías Piñeiro (staged with Lois Patiño) gives voice to a character never seen in the play.

“Sycorax” will be screened Thursday and Saturday in a short program which is part of Currents, the festival’s sidebar for experimental films. Another highlight is Payal Kapadia’s feature film “A Night Without Knowing Nothing” (Saturday and Sunday), which mixes narrative modes to obsessively ruminate on student activism in India. The wonderful “The Girl and the Spider” (Thursday and Saturday), which ignores conventional editing rules, is not in Currents but could be.

From a revival perspective, John Carpenter’s “Assault on Precinct 13” will be shown outdoors at Damrosch Park on Sunday and indoors on October 7; Michael Powell’s restored “Bluebeard Castle”, taken from Bartok’s opera, will be screened on Monday and October 7; and “Radio On” (Tuesday and Wednesday), a gloomy road odyssey filmed in Britain in the late 1970s, deserve to be rediscovered. See filmlinc.org for details.

On Instagram Monday, Joe Rogan may have doubled down on his stance against vaccination warrants, suggesting they pose a threat to “FREEDOM,” but that does not prevent him from doing his “Sacred Clown” tour at Madison Square Garden, where proof of vaccination is required.

Rogan, who debuted on the NBC sitcom “NewsRadio” and was the host of “Fear Factor,” has grown even more popular over the past decade as a UFC commentator and in particular as a podcaster: “The Joe Rogan Experience” won him millions of fans and millions of dollars thanks to a lucrative deal with Spotify.

Tickets for Rogan’s show at the Garden, which takes place Saturday at 8 p.m., start at $ 39.50 and are available through Ticketmaster. If you plan to bring your smartphone, be aware that Rogan has a mandate of its own: inside the arena, members of the public must store their devices in magnetically sealed pouches, which will be provided.

Art museums

Perhaps the Queens Museum developed the idea of “A year of uncertainty (You)” thinking the world might get a little less uncertain as it debuts, but the series takes place while we’re still in the throes of a pandemic. Begun in January when the museum brought together artists, activists and others to examine and strengthen the institution’s role in culture and community development, the series will run through January 2022 with the fruit of these collaborations. .

Families today often have to choose between cultural events that are outdoors, indoors, or virtual. MetFest is all three, as well as in several languages.

Presented by the Metropolitan Museum of Art from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturdays, this celebration transforms the environment of the Fifth Avenue building into an artistic adventure. Both online and outdoor programs are free, while indoor ones are included in museum admission, which is free for children under 12.

In the square, young people can play games and do drawing activities like Fascinating Facades, in which the sculptural installation by Carol Bove “Sessions don’t help” will serve as inspiration for the children’s own creations.

Highlights inside include a scavenger hunt; Bilingual Drag Queen story times in English, Spanish and Cantonese in the Sackler Gallery; and manufacture of mobiles in the Cantor Roof Garden. The Temple of Dendur will offer free drawing, while the medieval galleries will host a jewelry workshop and a “How did they do that?” “ session devoted to tapestries. (A full schedule is online.)

Stay at home? The outdoor music and dance performances will be streamed live on the museum’s Facebook page, YouTube channel and website. The festival webpage also offers a video story time and instructions for art projects.

Beers have been pouring from taps in the basement at 55 Christopher Street since 1919. And for the past four decades, jazz and blues have been the main offering on this Greenwich Village dive. When there is a cover, it is usually as low as the free space (pro tip: bow your head as you enter).

The pandemic has been tough on 55 Bar, and after more than a year of foreclosure, its management is well behind rents. The club has been holding a series of benefit concerts since last week and take donations via GoFundMe.

This series ends this weekend. Grammy-winning drummer Antonio Sanchez (best known for his drum partition only to “Birdman”) by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, on Fridays at 9:30 pm and 11 pm, with a star quartet: Donny McCaslin and Miguel Zenón on saxophones and Scott Colley on bass. On Saturday, Oz Noy, fusion guitarist, leads his own quartet. At $ 25, coverage for these shows is higher than usual at 55 Bar, but still well below prices elsewhere in town.
