5 advantages in the trenches together to get back (carefully) to work

We were actually quite worried that people would adopt their worst behavior. But for the most part, everyone behaves very well. Everyone is happy to talk to the bartenders and talk to us because they have been missing out on talking to people other than their friends and family for so long. There were a lot of regulars who came back – I knew their faces before and I sort of knew them, but everyone came together because no one wants to take this social interaction for granted.

One of the good things that makes my job a bit easier on a technical level is that bands haven’t played in a really loud environment for a long time. They play more calmly than before, which reduces all the background noise on stage. Most of us come back with a new perspective after spending several months without working at all. When the groups were loading it was like kind of a problem – but now whenever we have a group loaded I’m excited to run around and lift heavy things and crazy things like that. It reminds me that we are back there.

Part of my job is to avoid surprises. It’s not about the noise, the news, the propaganda, or whatever else you want to believe or support. It’s a question of whether or not someone gets sick.

Everything is affected because when we go to a city you have to involve a lot of local workers at the sites. Some artists who toured regularly have reduced their production. Each tour will have its own restrictions or requests, but we ask that all local staff be vaccinated and that everyone wear masks throughout the day, vaccinated or not. It’s just taking all the precautions – you try to protect yourself as much as you can because you have a lot of people traveling together in confined spaces, on your buses.

I think the most important thing for everyone is that backstage access is going to be next to zero, in terms of anyone not working. Any sort of visit from someone who is not working or touring staff, it probably just won’t happen. There are no lint, no extra people, not a single guy who is just there to carry towels.

I can’t speak for everyone, but I think the general feeling is that artists are excited to come back to what they love. If there’s nervousness, it’s just a matter of being able to get through the tour without a problem. In total, with the first parts, there are around 85 of us traveling together, and we have to interact with local workers in different cities on a daily basis. The goal is not to make anyone sick, because this is only a domino effect.
