To help address unequal access to Covid-19 vaccines around the world – a problem that “remains the Achilles heel” of the fight against the pandemic – the World Health Organization is launching a vaccine manufacturing program in Latin America and the Caribbean, Dr Carissa Etienne, director of the Pan American Health Organization, said on Wednesday.

“Much of today’s vaccine supply remains in the hands of rich countries around the world,” she said. “We need to develop regional pharmaceutical production so that we can be in charge. “

She said her organization, which is part of WHO, is analyzing around 30 proposals for making messenger RNA vaccines – the same type as the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna shots – and expects to decide next month which ones to implement.

According to Dr Jarbas Barbosa, deputy director of the Pan American agency, the “most feasible proposals”, including those already enjoying guaranteed investment support, will be given priority in an effort to accelerate the project.

MRNAs “vaccines are among the most effective vaccines against Covid-19, and the technology is highly adaptable, so it has enormous potential for use against other viruses,” said Dr Etienne.

The vaccines produced by the program are to be distributed to countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, a region where an average of only 23 percent of the population has been fully immunized so far. “In many countries the coverage is much lower,” said Dr Etienne. “Just over 3% of people have been vaccinated in Guatemala and just over 4% in Jamaica. “

Many Caribbean islands, including Jamaica, report sharp rise in new cases, and Haitian health system struggles to care for survivors of the disease devastating August 14 earthquake that killed more than 2,200 people.

“Logistics and security concerns continue to limit the delivery of supplies, the deployment of staff to affected areas and the transfer of patients to other hospitals,” said Dr Etienne.
