As the remnants of Hurricane Ida move inland in the coming days, the storm system is expected to lose strength, but continues to pose a threat to many parts of the southeast. , the National Hurricane Center noted.

Ida, which was downgraded to a tropical storm early Monday morning, will likely bring heavy precipitation, and possibly severe flooding, to Louisiana, southern Mississippi and coastal communities in Alabama throughout the day. . Precipitation totals could reach up to 24 inches in parts of southeast Louisiana.

“Heavy rains combined with storm surges resulted in catastrophic impacts along the southeastern coast of Louisiana, with extensive flash floods and riverine flooding continuing further inland,” said the meteorological service.

The Alabama coast and western parts of Florida could receive five to ten inches of rain until Tuesday morning, and in central Mississippi, up to a foot of rain.

Tornadoes are possible Monday in southeast Louisiana, southern Mississippi, southwest Alabama and western Florida.

Monday morning the system was about 40 miles southwest of Jackson, Mississippi, moving north at 9 mph with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph. Tropical storm force winds extended up to 195 miles, mainly over water southeast of the center.

The storm is expected to turn northeast on Monday, heading into the Tennessee Valley, including Humphreys County, where 20 people were killed this month like flash floods went through the communities there. Winds will ease, but the area could receive up to six inches of rain on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Hurricane Center said.

The Nashville National Weather Service issued a flood watch for most of Middle Tennessee starting Monday evening.

By Wednesday, the storm is expected to move through the Upper Ohio Valley, dropping up to six inches of rain, and then continuing into the northeast later in the week.

All of these areas could experience flash floods, the Hurricane Center said.
