Confused awakens who like to complain about the alleged oppression in American free society will now have the chance to see a truly oppressive, intolerant and fanatic regime operating in Afghanistan. Already, the Taliban have provided a concrete example of an armed insurgency for the US media to reflect on.

Tragically for the Afghans and the world, the Taliban armed insurgency succeeded so quickly after the withdrawal of American troops that these oppressors are arming themselves further at our expense. Brett Forrest of the Journal reports:

The Afghan army laid down its weapons and the Taliban wasted no time in retrieving them, raising concerns about the ease with which treasures of American-made weapons, military planes and armored vehicles have fallen into the hands of the enemy and the new capabilities they bring.

Dozens of videos emerged of Taliban fighters rejoicing near abandoned US helicopters, carrying US-supplied M24 sniper rifles and M18 assault weapons, stacking other small arms and equipment in stacks without end and driving Humvees and other US-made military trucks.

The Taliban seized planes, tanks and artillery from Afghan outposts and during the evacuation of US personnel, revealing one of the highest costs of a US troop withdrawal amid a collapse of the Afghan government and army.

The speed of the collapse particularly shocked those who made the mistake of giving credit to the President’s comments. Alberto Nardelli at Bloomberg reports:

President Joe Biden told his key allies in June that he would maintain a sufficient security presence in Afghanistan to ensure they could continue to operate in the capital after the main US withdrawal, a vow he said ahead of the final push. speed of the Taliban across the country, according to a British diplomatic note seen by Bloomberg.

Biden promised British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other leaders at the Group of Seven summit in Cornwall, England, that “essential American contributors” would remain in place to ensure the security of Kabul after forces withdrew. NATO, according to the memo. UK officials have determined that the US will provide enough staff to ensure the UK Embassy in Kabul can continue to function.

No wonder Mr Biden was not eager to pick up the phone when Mr Johnson called this week.

Last month, Mr. Biden provided another very inaccurate forecast on Afghanistan in comments to reporters at the White House. Five days later, as many as 23 U.S. personnel from our embassy in Kabul signed an urgent cable in Washington directly contradicting Mr. Biden’s public claims. Vivian Salama of the Journal reports:
