The coronavirus situation is worsening in the French overseas territories of Martinique and Guadeloupe in the Caribbean, where a wave of new cases, fueled by the rapidly spreading Delta variant, threatens to overwhelm the hospital capacity of two islands.

“The situation is extremely serious,” Sébastien Lecornu, the minister in charge of overseas territories, told reporters, adding that the current rate of new cases of coronavirus in the islands had never been known in any of the regions of France.

“These are incidence rates that have never been known in these territories, but also in all the territories of the Republic combined,” he said.

Guadeloupe has reported nearly 1,750 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, with resuscitation services from hospitals operating at about 156 percent of its capacity. Martinique has reported 1,200 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and hospital intensive care units are at 227% of capacity, according to the latest data health authorities.

At the end of July, Martinique was subjected to a new confinement limiting movement while a night curfew was established in Guadeloupe. But in the face of the deteriorating situation, local authorities in Martinique have announced a stricter lockdown which will force non-essential shops, hotels and beaches to be closed while residents’ movements will be limited to a maximum radius of one kilometer of their home. Tourists have also been urged to leave the island.

In Guadeloupe, Mr. Lecornu declared that “it will obviously be necessary to tighten the containment measures, given the urgency”.

Sunday, Olivier Véran, French Minister of Health, called to volunteer doctors and nurses from mainland France to help the hospitals of the islands “which are facing a very intense epidemic wave which affects a population still under-vaccinated”.

The islands’ vaccination rate is much lower than that of mainland France: only 22% of their collective population have received at least a first dose of the vaccine, compared to around 65% on the mainland.
