NEW ORLEANS – With Hurricane Ida tracking maps consistently showing an expected path to southeast Louisiana, New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell issued a stern warning on Saturday that city residents who intend to leave should do so immediately.

“This storm will not weaken in any way, and there is always an opportunity for the storm to strengthen,” Ms. Cantrell said at a media briefing. “Time is not on our side. It grows rapidly, it intensifies.

City officials are asking residents who plan to stay in the city to be prepared for prolonged power outages, limited emergency services and several days of high temperatures after the storm has passed.

“The first 72 are upon you,” said Collin Arnold, director of the New Orleans Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness. “The first three days will be difficult for the speakers to reach you. “

Forecasters predict Hurricane Ida will be a Category 4 storm on land on Sunday, the 16th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, which left more than 1,800 people dead.

“What we learned during Hurricane Katrina is that we are all first responders,” Ms. Cantrell said. “It’s about taking care of each other.
