One of the mysteries of the past 10 days is President Biden’s reluctance to say a disheartening word about the Taliban. He was much harder on our Afghan allies than with the jihadists who took control of the country and humiliated the United States. The reason is almost certainly that Mr. Biden thinks he needs the cooperation of the Taliban to put Americans out of danger in Kabul.

If it wasn’t already clear, a Taliban spokesman made it clear on Monday when he said the US president had better not extend his deadline for all US troops to be out of the country after the August 31.

“It’s a red line. President Biden announced that on the 31st they would withdraw all their military forces. So if they expand it, that means they are expanding the occupation when it is not necessary, ”Taliban spokesman Suhail Shaheen told Sky News.

“If the United States or the United Kingdom asked for more time to continue the evacuations, the answer is no. Or there would be consequences, ”he said, adding that the extension of the deadline“ would create mistrust between us. ”He added that it“ would provoke a reaction ”.

It sounds like a threat in any language, and it explains why Mr Biden has been so suspicious of that August 31 date, which is only a week away. The president said on Sunday that there had been “discussions” on the extension of the deadline, but without specifying with whom. If he was talking about the Taliban, he seems to have received his response from these negotiations.
