In Rue du Palais, a narrow street in Place du Forum in Arles, France, where Roman senators once debated and, many years later, Vincent Van Gogh painted his famous “Café le Soir terrace” (1888), is an 18th century stone building with its own history. Former laboratory of pharmacists, it has just reopened as Fragonard Housethe last boutique in and, upstairs, the first guest house of the French heritage perfume brand. The two spaces were designed in collaboration with the Parisian and New York studio be-poles, which was keen to preserve most of the building’s original terracotta floors and wooden ceilings, as well as the stone spiral staircase leading to the guest house’s six bedrooms, which are equipped with their own kitchen and distributed over three upper floors. “We wanted to embody this feeling of freshness of the south of France”, explains Virginie Boulenger, interior designer of be-poles, which resulted in walnut shelves, white linen curtains, woolen mattresses on antique marble measuring and sinks. The third floor suite also enjoys exclusive access to the rooftop terrace, which overlooks the clock tower which has been showing local time since 1555. fragonard.com/fr-int/maison-fragonard-arles.

When Yiyun Mao, originally from Shanghai and passionate about tea, moved to Milan in 2016, she faced shock from the caffeine culture: “Italy is a country where life is relatively slow, but Milan is different, ”she explains. “It’s a city for work. People drink espresso to speed things up, to work more efficiently. But the tea takes longer. It’s meant to slow you down. Providing a contemplative counterbalance to the fast-paced city, Mao opened Xing Cha, a 430-square-foot Chinese teahouse in Milan’s trendy Brera district, in October 2019; after a break imposed by the pandemic, it reopened in May 2020. The tea room is divided into two: at the front is a shop with 40 types of tea, a selection of art and poetry books and ceramics and tea ware for sale; in the back is a long communal coffee table for sipping tea quietly but with a clear conscience. Mao also hosts Chinese tea ceremonies, tea tastings, textile and ceramic exhibits, and flower arrangement workshops in the space. xingcha.it.

When friends and moms Melissa Goldstein and Natalia Rachlin decided in the midst of a pandemic to launch a magazine on motherhood, they knew they wanted to hijack the busy territory of parenting publications. “Motherhood as a subject seeps into so many interesting spaces – from politics and pop culture to art and sex,” says Rachlin. Following this logic, their biannual magazine, Mother Tongue, is less about mothers than about women with children. The first issue, released last month, features an interview with Los Angeles-based artist Leena Similu, whose figurative ceramic vases show the influence of her childhood in Brixton and her Cameroonian roots; a conversation with feminist porn pioneer Erika Lust (in a section of the magazine cheekily titled “Day Jobs & Blow Jobs”); and a portfolio of 13 photographers detailing, in words and images, the places they escape to when they need to be alone. The design of the magazine is simple and chic. About his aesthetic, Goldstein says, “We were more drawn to boldness and badass than to pretty and polished. ” $ 20 per issue, languematernemagazine.com.

Among the intimacies shared between the colorist and the client, perhaps one of the most guarded is the subject of gray hair and how to cover it up. Los Angeles stylist Jay Small and entrepreneur Allison Conrad, co-founders of Ary (a derivation of the French word stop, which means “to stop”), approached the problem from a different angle, looking for ways not only to cover the gray, but also to slow its growth. Together with engineers from MIT, a pharmacologist and a clinical dietitian, they developed a supplement, Not today, Gray, which targets hair color loss using vitamins, minerals and antioxidants with anti-aging properties. The ingredients – including vitamins B12 and D, folic acid, calcium, and black sesame seed extract – help hair follicle cells maintain melanin, keeping strands not only rich in color but more thicker, softer and brighter. $ 40, areygrey.com.

Its status as a cemented “superfood” makes sardines to their heart’s content, so there’s no better time to explore the world of canned fish. To this end, former chef Dan Waber organizes a selection of over 300 varieties of canned fish from around the world – from a $ 2.50 can of Moroccan sardines in a large format at 105 $ can of spanish white tuna brisket – available at the online store based on his family-owned tomato farm in Montgomery County, PA. It also provides tasting notes (The knives of La Brújula of Spain are “brackish, tender and devoid of sand … [a] luxury “) as well as an omakase service: tell Waber which fish and flavors you are interested in, and how much you want to spend, and he will create a personalized box with email comments on each box and tips for enjoying it at better … He could add a little something more – Baltic Sea Sprat smoked with heather and chamomile, let’s say – to stretch your taste beyond its comfort zone and maybe whip up your next order.
