Like the Olympics before that, the Tokyo Paralympic Games will allow virtually no spectators.

Organizers and Japanese government officials made the announcement on Monday.

For events on public roads, such as certain races on foot or by bicycle, the government has asked citizens not to attend. The press release indicates that efforts will be made to allow certain school groups to attend certain events.

“We hope you understand that these measures are unavoidable and implemented to prevent the spread of infection,” a joint statement said. “Everyone is encouraged to watch the Games at home. “

No supporters were allowed at the Olympic events, except for a few events outside Tokyo with limited capacity. The stands were occupied by members of the media, athletes and coaches and volunteers from the Olympic Games. Most of the events had only a few hundred people in total.

The limits extended to opening and closing ceremonies, which each performed their traditional pageantry as a made-for-television event in a nearly empty stadium.

Tokyo has been in a state of emergency since July 12 due to increased rates of coronavirus infection. Japan, which averaged about 1,000 new cases for much of the start of the summer, passed the 10,000 mark in early August during the Olympics, and the totals continue to rise.

The Paralympic Games begin August 24 and run through September 5.
