With telephone lines cut and roads disrupted or controlled by gangs, news outlets and emergency officials have rushed to try and gain access to parts of the city. Haiti damaged by a powerful earthquake on Saturday morning. Port-au-Prince, the capital, is 80 miles west of the quake’s epicenter, near Les Cayes – and about four and a half hours by car.

The flight time from Port-au-Prince to Les Cayes is only 30 minutes. News services like the Associated Press have tried to bring journalists on medical or charter flights to document the condition of the affected region.

Photographs and reports began to filter through on Saturday afternoon, but in the meantime, social media has become a key source of news about the earthquake’s devastation, providing images and videos.

Video captured by several journalists and online media shows the destruction of several homes and buildings as people try to help those who may be caught under the rubble.

The messages show people still in pajamas or towels, on the streets seeking safety after fleeing violently shaking houses. Entire three-story buildings were flattened at eye level. One video showed a group of men sifting through rubble in an attempt to extract a person buried below.

This is not the first time that social media has fulfilled an urgent topical role in the Caribbean. Climate change has caused more severe storms and hurricanes to hit the region with greater force, and crippling damage and impacts to infrastructure have often hit social media first.

According to information from The Pulitzer Center.

This was true during Hurricane Maria in 2017 and also in 2010, when a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti, killing over 220,000 people.
