the New York Times called out Fox News for how many hosts and on-air presenters reported on the comments made by Annie karni out of context.

In one declaration given to CNN Olivier Darcy, a NY Times spokesperson said, “This is yet another clear example of a bad faith attack on a journalist. Our journalist’s comments have been taken out of context. Although Fox did not launch the harassment campaign against our reporter, they purposely escalated it.

Karni appeared on CNN this weekend to report on the 60th birthday party hosted by the former president Barack obama. She broke the story that the controversial party – which was originally scheduled for 500 guests and 200 servers – had been drastically reduced due to concerns over the delta variant of Covid-19 and a recent spike in infections.

Jim acosta asked Karni in a weekend appearance what the people of Martha’s Vineyard thought about the Obama party and the controversy that followed.

Karni opened by reminding CNN viewers, “Well, first of all, to be clear, this party is outdoors. All guests had to submit negative covid tests to a Covid coordinator and were encouraged to get vaccinated. They weren’t required to be vaccinated, ”adding,“ But most of this crowd is supposed to be vaccinated. They therefore follow all the precautions of the CDC. “

Karni went on to talk about “the feeling on the island” and shared “mixed things” with the people she had interviewed. Some people were “upset that there were going to be hundreds of people from all over the country showing up on the island, a small community of summer residents who are nervous about getting together.” .

But she also cited “other people who thought the controversy was really overdone. They follow all safety precautions. People go to bigger sporting events than that. It will be sure. It’s a sophisticated, vaccinated crowd. It’s just a matter of optics; it’s not about security.

Here’s this clip, with full context, from CNN:

Karni’s report that some residents of Martha Vineyard thought Obama and his revelers were a “sophisticated and vaccinated” mob, however, was taken out of context, first in a clip that was falsely edited and shared on Twitter , but then picked up by many on-air talent on Fox News in much of Monday’s news and opinion broadcasts. According to a search of the transcription database Eyes, Karni’s comment has been discussed 24 times on Fox News in the past 24 hours. However, on several occasions it has been taken out of context completely.

Take, for example, how the news anchor Bill Hemmer presented the story for the news program American Newsroom. He introduced the segment by playing the Karni and Acosta music video first, but only played the part of the segment in which she said, “It’s gonna be safe. It’s a sophisticated, vaccinated crowd. C It’s just a matter of optics; it’s not about safety.

“This is a sophisticated vaccinated crowd, and it is all about the optics,” Hemmer continued, before reading an Glenn greenwald tweet which also misrepresented what Karni said, in part: “New York Times journalist justifying the no-mask birthday party because he only invited a sophisticated vaccinated crowd is about as iconic of liberal discourse as it gets.

Except it’s not because Hemmer – and Greenwald – completely twisted what Karni said. Fox News Contributor Joe concha Followed up Hemmer’s misrepresentation by adding, “Well, let’s be clear: The New York Times reporter there her name is Annie Karni she said she just shared the sentiment of a Martha’s Vineyard resident of the story who said everything was overkill.

You can watch this interview here:

Hemmer’s presentation is just one example of the misinformation provided on Fox News on this matter. To be fair, several Fox News personalities like Harris faulkner presented the context of Karni’s commentary correctly, only for the panelists to then focus on ‘sophisticated’ shots of opinion leaders like Will cain, who effectively denounced the “rules for you and not for me” style hypocrisy.

But as Karni mentioned in his hit with Acosta, nothing about Obama’s 60th birthday party ignored CDC guidelines. Martha’s Vineyard is currently a “hotspot,”But the CDC only asks for a interior mask according to its guidelines. And while it could be argued that revelers inside an outdoor tent are not as safe as an outdoor setting, nothing in the Obama party has flouted the guidelines of mitigation of Covid. That hasn’t stopped Fox News figures from launching political attacks, even if they were out of context or factually wrong.

Mediaite has contacted Fox News for comment and will update this post if and when they respond.
