Neil Patrick Harris and her husband, David Burtka, sell their Harlem home, a renovated 1908 brown stone they’ve filled with collectibles and fancy furniture, from a parrot robot to the bar’s stand on “How I Met Your Mother,”The television sitcom where the two actors had played. There is even a “secret” room hidden on the top floor.

“We think of it like Willy Wonka meets the Magic Castle,” Mr. Harris said jokingly in an email about the eclectic setting.

The two are sad to be leaving Brownstone at 2036 Fifth Avenue between 125th and 126th Streets, but their primary residence is now in East Hampton. (They bought a 13.5-acre estate there four years ago.)

“The Harlem Brownstone holds some of our dearest and dearest memories,” Mr. Harris said. “Our children have spent most of their lives there. It is a rightfully special place.

Mr. Burtka felt much the same about the house: “She will always have a soft spot for my heart. “

The asking price for the home is $ 7.325 million, with $ 19,712 in annual property taxes, according to Vickey Barron, a Compass broker who lists the brownstone with Pacey Barron, her colleague and her daughter.

Mr. Harris and Mr. Burtka had purchased the five-story, Italian-style structure near Marcus Garvey Park, for approximately $ 3.6 million in 2013, a year before their wedding, in what was then considered a high price tag for the Central Harlem neighborhood. They spent the next 14 months converting it into a single family residence from a bed and breakfast, with the help of the architect. Jeffery Povero and interior designer Trace Lehnhoff. In its early days, the building would also have served as a sweatshop for Irish workers and a school for girls.

The couple carefully restored and retained much of the original architecture, such as the sculpted moldings and numerous built-in features, oak floors, tin ceilings and the staircase adorned with oak, sycamore and ash. , while adding some modern equipment and period pieces. “We both wanted to respect the history of the space, of the region, while making it contemporary, creative and accessible,” said Mr. Harris.

The 20 foot wide brownstone is approximately 8,000 square feet, with four bedrooms, plus a library / living room that could be converted into a fifth bedroom, as well as four full baths and two half baths. There’s also a home theater, laundry room, and a full basement with a gym, wine cellar, and playroom for their 10-year-old fraternal twins, Gideon and Harper.

The outdoor space measures almost 2,000 square feet and includes a terraced rear garden, a third floor patio, an outdoor Jacuzzi next to the master bedroom and a huge irrigated roof terrace with a barbecue and a covered pergola. wisteria.

“The rooftop terrace is like a backyard in the sky,” Ms. Barron said, adding that “the whole house lends itself to entertaining”.

Mr. Harris and Mr. Burtka, who is also a chef, have hosted many parties and dinners there over the years. “There are so many places to have fun,” Burtka noted. Guests often gathered on the rooftop terrace or around a beautiful bar made of wood and glass reclaimed from a Connecticut hotel. And before they left, they were invited to choose one of the many drawers from a personalized apothecary cabinet downstairs, each filled with a playful farewell gift. Some of these encounters have been detailed in Mr. Burtka’s book “Life is a party», A collection of recipes and tips for entertainment published in 2019.

Throughout the house are the contemporary art collection of artist couple like Tom LaDuke and Kehinde Wiley, as well as an assortment of taxidermy and magic and spectacle memorabilia, like the robotic parrot, and there is a mechanical piano. Mr. Harris – who appeared in numerous films, television shows, and theatrical productions, including the earlier comedy-drama “Doogie Howser, MD” – is an avid magician, as is his character in “How I Met Your Mother “. “He has performed at the Magic Castle in Hollywood, California, and previously served as its president.

The main entrance to the house is through a large front door at the top of a classic stoop. A hall serves two lounges. The front part contains the staircase (there is no elevator), a music room, a powder room and a walk-in closet. The living room to the rear includes the wet bar and a gas fireplace, one of three in the house. Nearby is a prep kitchen and doors to the terraced garden.

The lower level, the garden level, houses the home theater, formerly a conference room, and contains office and storage spaces. “It has a separate entrance,” Ms. Barron said, which might be appealing to some buyers. “If they have a home office and you have people who have to come and go every day, they can walk in without disturbing your private home, which is a huge value.”

On the third floor is an anchored living room with a fireplace, a formal dining area, and a large kitchen fitted with a pantry, custom cabinetry, and Caesarstone countertops with a marble backsplash. Beyond the kitchen is a patio with a built-in gas barbecue.

The bedrooms are on the top two floors. The master suite is on the fourth level and has a spa-like marble bathroom, with another fireplace and Jacuzzi. Opposite the bedroom is a tin ceiling library / living room.

Mr. Harris keeps an office hidden behind a folding door on the fifth floor. It opens by pressing the eyeball of a magician on an old poster, according to a 2015 brownstone profile by Architectural Digest, and contains original artwork from the Disneyland Haunted Mansion, plus posters and magical props.

Mr. Harris, however, did not disclose the secret room too much in his email. “It’s a, umm, secret,” he said, “hence the, umm, name of the room.”
