Little love stories: "Every relationship has its hiccups, yet ..."

My sister is younger than me – fiercer and more temperamental too. She lives in a town 200 miles north of mine. We write to each other regularly, but we still miss and mystify each other. One night in June, at home together for the first time in six months, our parents asleep, she whispered my name, “Come see the stars. I got out of bed and joined her under the endless sky, our necks outstretched in reverence. “I needed a reminder that they existed and I thought you could too,” she said. I did. Star-struck, we went to bed. – Amy Guay

Naked under a sheet the morning after our first love, I asked when he got a tattoo of a tree with broken roots on his back right shoulder. “When I was 17,” he said, “after my parents divorced.” I took a look at the Buddhist self-help books he had picked up after his own divorce a few months earlier. In the cut roots of the tattoo, I recognized the desire to connect, to be a part of something bigger than yourself. Six years later, when our daughter was two weeks old, he returned from a tattoo parlor with his roots inked. – Stevie Trujillo

Every relationship has its hiccups, but nothing prepared my husband and I for that first wave of hiccups over spaghetti. Initially, the rapid-fire “snag” sound was funny. Hours later, boring. The next day, while Richard was still gasping alarmingly. It’s been 10 years now. We desperately searched for diagnoses; Richard underwent draconian treatment. He still has the hiccups. On and off, for hours. We could see these diaphragm spasms as a nagging reminder of what can go wrong with our bodies and our lives. We try to accept them as a lingering assurance that our marriage can withstand anything. – David Hubbard

Three inches of rain fell in one day in Michigan recently, and I was still waiting for an excited call from my mom. She liked to follow my weather for hundreds of miles south of Ohio, calling whenever it was, or would be, extreme. Gardening and her great-grandchildren were also good topics for us. Politics and smoking were not. She hasn’t been gone for a long time, but I’ll always think of her when the weather gets rough. – Mary beth lewis
