The well-intentioned but bromide-laden opening part of the film introduces us to Kipchoge the man, presented as a runner with an indefatigable work ethic, a contemplative attitude, and a basic modesty. We hear about how he inspires his colleagues and young athletes. There are so many slow-motion clips, abrupt black-and-white shifts, or scenes that seem to be staged for effect (for example, as Kipchoge explains how his mother instilled a sense of discipline, we see a woman waking up a boy for a morning routine) that you can cut the movie into Nike commercials with minimal modification. Director Jake Scott, son of Ridley, has indeed makes such advertisements.

But the documentary’s pulse quickens as it turns its attention to Kipchoge’s efforts to beat the two-hour mark. His 1:59:40 does not count as an official world record as he did not run it under traditional marathon restrictions. The film illustrates how a wide range of employees optimized the conditions. Various participants describe the road surface, how laser guidance helped set the pace, and how teams of runners took turns forming Y-formations around Kipchoge to reduce air resistance. Athletics, Physics, and What Someone Calls the “Ballet Piece” of the event are all moving to see.
