The jury selection begins on Tuesday in the long-awaited trial of Elizabeth Holmes, the disgraced founder of blood testing startup Theranos facing a dozen scam leaders and conspiracy to commit electronic fraud.

At the heart of the lawsuit are questions about what Ms. Holmes, 37, knew exactly about the problems with Theranos’ blood testing machines and whether she intentionally misled investors about the company’s technology. If found guilty, she could serve up to 20 years in prison.

The case has caught public attention as another example of a Silicon Valley startup gone bad. But Theranos was unusual in what he was run by a female entrepreneur. Ms. Holmes exploited this difference, using it to attract attention. She often wore a Steve Jobs-esque black turtleneck uniform and spoke in an unusually deep voice. Before Theranos fell out of favor, Ms Holmes was crowned the world’s youngest billionaire and regularly posed for magazine covers.

His high profile can be a challenge for jury selection. Prosecutors and his defense attorneys may struggle to choose jurors who have yet to make their decision on the case. About half of the 200 potential jurors had already consumed media related to the case, according to documents filed by the court last week.

Prospective jurors filled out a 28-page questionnaire asking them about their media consumption habits, medical history, and knowledge of over 200 possible witnesses. a even more complete questionnaire proposed by Ms. Holmes’ legal team included over 100 questions. In June, it was dismissed by Judge Edward Davila of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, who is overseeing the case. The trial takes place in San José, California.

Jury selection is expected to last until Wednesday and could last longer. Opening arguments begin next week.
