Jimothy came to embrace being unconventional. He grew up in social housing in the affluent Primrose Hill area of London, not far from Camden Market, and was raised by his Spanish mother, with whom he still lives. Her father, who is of Caribbean descent but was born in Britain, wasn’t much around.

A lover of the streets and intelligent, Jimothy enjoyed an unusual freedom as a child. “When I was 12,” he said, “I felt like a great man.” He would explore London on foot, walking to other boroughs up to four miles away. He would also meet and befriend older children online. “I was texting them on Facebook and like, ‘Yo, I like what you’re doing, let’s relax,’” he said.

This precocity is evident to this day. As he browsed the market stalls, Jimothy bargained bonhomie with the vendors, purchasing a burgundy waistcoat and a counterfeit TikTok. He was charming and caring company, although a little inclined to lecture, whether it was about the importance of cultivating “severe happiness”, eating healthy, or not overthinking.

Jimothy suffers from dyslexia and dyscalculia, which affects his ability to understand numbers – he wears a digital watch because he has trouble reading a clock face – and has attended college for children with educational needs specials.

There he was free from the pressure to conform to the social whims of his peers, he said, but he was also under-stimulated and neglected by teachers.

Instead, he learned what he needed to know on his own through YouTube. He learned to dance by watching body-poppers and hip-hop videos, which led to his choppy and fluid dance style. “It was my school,” he says. “Oh my God. I learned more from YouTube than anything else. Cooking, how to make friends, how to be confident, how to talk to girls, how to kiss. Everything.”
