For dog walkers, all of this uncertainty has turned planning into a game of Tetris, with customers calling on a Sunday night to request a Monday walk or needing only erratic care. While their needs may be inconsistent, they nonetheless often want consistency for their pets, asking for the same walker each time. “It’s really hard for us to say, ‘This person is available for all your needs that you’re going to have,’ because it’s just not realistic,” said Dani Pedraza, owner of the Big City Woof Walker, a dog walking service that operates in New York and Chicago. “It’s hard for them to understand that.”

Ms Pedraza said that due to understaffing she sometimes needed to cancel walks, which had never happened before the pandemic. On the positive side, customers have become accustomed to living in a world where goods and services don’t always arrive on time. They are more patient than before the pandemic, with many calling if a walker was even a minute late.

Once the dogs are out of the house, their new guardians grapple with a generation of puppies with questionable social skills. Born into a locked-in world, many of them missed out on socializing opportunities. If no one ever knocks on the door, how can a dog know he mustn’t lose his mind when a stranger walks into his empty apartment, puts a leash on his collar, and takes him for a walk with a dozen? other hype- puppies? Ms Pedraza said one of her walkers recently left an apartment because the dog kept barking and growling.

While dog trainers have been overwhelmed in 2020 with new owners hoping to teach their puppies good manners, 2021 is all about teaching them not to melt when everyone else leaves. Lonely puppies destroy baseboards, sofas and bark so incessantly that neighbors call to complain.

“People who don’t even know their dogs have separation anxiety will go away for eight hours in September and these are dogs that are going to freak out, ”said Holly Santana, director of training at Dog well done, a Westchester dog trainer.

Humans are anxious too. Dog day care centers are increasingly receiving noon calls from concerned owners asking to see photos and videos of their pets playing. “People have a lot more anxiety than pets,” said Ms. Isenstein, of the Canine Camp. “A lot of dogs are puppies so they are happy to play with other puppies. They come in and have fun.

A few weeks ago Grace Townsend, who lives in Jersey City with her boyfriend and their 7 month old Portuguese water dog, Cheerio, went to a friend’s birthday party in Hoboken. They left Cheerio in her crate and spent most of the time wondering if she was okay. “I was like, ‘Oh my God the cake still hasn’t come out, should I go? “I feel guilty,” said Townsend, executive assistant for Harry’s, a shaving brand. “You come home and of course she’s doing great. “
