Images of Hurricane Ida wreckage across Louisiana are grim and the storm is not over. But the good news is that New Orleans appears to have weathered the storm as well as might be expected thanks to its post-Katrina flood protection investments. It’s a reminder of how strengthening infrastructure against the unpredictable Mother Nature pays off.

Ida struck Port Fourchon in Louisiana on Sunday as a Category 4 storm with winds of 150 miles per hour and one to two inches of rain per hour. Its winds make it the fifth strongest storm to hit the American continent. Such strong winds and precipitation will inevitably cause flooding and damage buildings.

But the biggest worry in Ida was that a catastrophic storm surge would break through New Orleans’ levees and overwhelm the city as happened 16 years ago to the day during Hurricane Katrina. Presenting itself as a lesser Category 3 storm when it made landfall, Katrina killed some 2,000 people and caused damage estimated at $ 125 billion. New Orleans took years to recover.

Yet Louisiana and the federal government have since spent $ 14.5 billion to strengthen flood walls, dikes and drainage systems. The US Army Corps of Engineers has beefed up pump stations to withstand winds of 205 miles per hour and implemented redundant power systems to keep them running if the power grid goes down, as it l did on Sunday.

These investments seem to have paid off. Many streets are inundated by the heavy rains and some small towns outside of the New Orleans Flood Protection Fortress have been inundated. But more importantly, a spokesperson for the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority said on Monday that there had been no levee rupture or problems with the pumps in New Brunswick. -Orléans.
