The moderates also joined forces with CAP Shield, founded by Democrats ousted in November from Republican-leaning districts, to push back efforts to smear all Democrats with left-wing slogans. Some argued a new pro-Israel group, Democratic Majority for Israel, determined to thwart the party’s emerging Palestinian rights movement – and defeat left-wing candidates who they say have crossed an unacceptable political line on the Jewish state.

Friday, another centrist group, No Labels, started running an advertisement backing Rep. Henry Cuellar of Texas, one of nine budget holdouts who is challenged by young Liberal Jessica Cisneros in the upcoming primary season. The ad urges him to “fight for the Biden agenda”, although he now tries to maintain much of it.

The idea, say the moderates, is to inoculate the party against slogans like Defund the Police that were effectively used against the swing-district Democrats in November, and to stop the incremental gains before divisions within the Party. Democrats don’t get as deep as they have been in the Republican Party. . The problem is more a question of tone and cooperation than of ideology, said Mark S. Mellman, a longtime Democratic strategist and pollster, who helped found the Democratic Majority for Israel and its political action committee.

“There is nothing revolutionary about ‘Medicare for all’, moving to a clean energy saving, a minimum wage of $ 15,” he said. “There is a lot of consistency around the general direction of the policy. But the rhetoric is different.

The efforts have left the liberals feeling aggrieved and worried that the Democratic establishment is actually harming the party – by sapping the life energy of young voters. Young liberals like Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Jamaal Bowman have not only defeated the Democratic pillars to win their seats in New York, but they have also captured the imagination of the next generation, said Waleed Shahid, spokesperson and Justice Democrats strategist, which promotes insurgent progressive candidates.

“The future of the party looks a lot more like AOC than it does Joe Biden,” he said.

The efforts of the establishment are bearing fruit. One of the political heroes of the left, Nina Turner, lost a House special election primary in Cleveland this month, after Rep. James E. Clyburn of South Carolina, the most senior African American in Congress, and Mr. Mellman’s group rushed to support a little-known but more conciliatory candidate, Shontel Brown. In New Orleans, the preferred progressive candidate in the race to replace Rep. Cedric Richmond, who joined Biden’s White House, also lost.

The Liberals say the moderates, not the progressives, are now the ones standing in the way of Mr. Biden’s agenda, causing a deadlock in the House and threatening the Social Policy Bill in the Senate.
