Ever since Americans started rolling up their sleeves for coronavirus vaccines, health officials have said that it is highly unlikely that those who are immune will be infected, or suffer from serious illness, or die. But preliminary data from seven states hint that the arrival of the Delta variant in July may have changed the calculation.

Breakthrough infections in those vaccinated accounted for at least one in five newly diagnosed cases in six of those states and higher percentages of total hospitalizations and deaths than those previously seen in each, according to figures collected by the New York Times.

The absolute numbers remain very low, however, and there is little doubt that vaccines remain powerfully protective. This continues to be “an unvaccinated pandemic,” as federal health officials have often said.

Still, the trend marks a shift in how vaccinated Americans might view their risks.

“Remember when the first vaccine studies came out, it was like no one was hospitalized, no one was dying,” said Dr. Robert Wachter, chairman of the Department of Medicine at the University of California at San Francisco. “This is clearly not true.”

The numbers support the view, widely shared by officials in the Biden administration, that some Americans might benefit from reminders In the coming months. Federal authorities plan to authorize additional shots as early as mid-September, although it is not clear who will receive them.

“While the chances of a breakthrough infection have increased dramatically, and I think the evidence is clear, and the level of protection against serious illness is no longer as robust as it used to be, I think the case is recalls are increasing quite quickly, ”said Dr. Wachter.

The seven states – California, Colorado, Massachusetts, Oregon, Utah, Vermont, and Virginia – were examined because they retain the most detailed data. It is not certain that the trends in these states continue across the United States.

In any case, scientists have always expected that as the population of people vaccinated increases, they will be represented more frequently in the tally of those who are seriously ill and who have died.

“We don’t want to dilute the message that the vaccine is extremely effective and protective, more than we ever initially hoped for,” said Dr Scott Dryden-Peterson, infectious disease physician and epidemiologist at Brigham & Boston Women’s Hospital.

“The fact that we are seeing revolutionary cases and revolutionary hospitalizations and deaths does not diminish the fact that it still saves the lives of many people.”

The CDC declined to comment on state figures. The agency is expected to discuss breakthrough infections, hospitalizations and vaccine effectiveness at a press briefing on Wednesday.

Most breakthrough infection scans included collected numbers until the end of June. Based on the cumulative numbers, the CDC and public health experts had concluded that breakthrough infections were extremely rare and that those vaccinated were very unlikely to become seriously ill.

State data claims that those vaccinated are much less likely to become seriously ill or die from Covid-19.
