Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said Wednesday that all city employees will need to be fully immunized by October 15. The city’s action, the second largest in the United States to impose such a requirement, came as coronavirus infections continue to spread rapidly across the country.

The policy will apply to more than 30,000 employees, including police, firefighters, park workers and remediation workers. Employees can request a medical or religious exemption.

“As the cases of Covid-19 continue to increase, we must take whatever measures are necessary and available to us to ensure the safety and health of everyone in our city,” Ms Lightfoot said in a statement. “Getting vaccinated has proven to be the best way to achieve this and to recover from this devastating pandemic. And so, we have decided to join other municipalities and government agencies across the country, including the US military, who are making this decision to protect the people who advance our cities and our country. “

Los Angeles City Council pass a similar vaccination mandate last week for the city’s nearly 60,000 municipal workers (public schools are not part of city government). Los Angeles County and the City of Seattle have also adopted warrants.

In New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that teachers and other school employees will need to be vaccinated, and other city employees will either need to be vaccinated or undergo weekly coronavirus tests.

The Food and Drug Administration on Monday granted full approval for Pfizer-BioNTech’s coronavirus vaccine for people 16 years of age and older, making the vaccine the first to exceed emergency use status in the United States.

Ms Lightfoot, whose administration has had difficult relations with the main unions, is expected to face resistance from their members, especially within the union representing the police. She said on Wednesday that her administration was in talks with the unions to “create an immunization policy that is achievable, fair and effective”.

The Chicago Police Fraternal Order said earlier this week that it opposed a warrant and was waiting for more information from the mayor’s office.

Bob Reiter, president of the Chicago Federation of Labor, which represents union members in Chicago and Cook County, said that while unions believe in the benefits of vaccination, “we don’t think punitive mandates are right. way to dramatically increase vaccination. “

“We believe this announcement may harden opposition to the vaccine, instead of protecting workers who have sacrificed so much over the past 18 months,” Reiter said in an email.

Almost 64 percent of Chicago residents aged 12 and over have been fully immunized; Nationally, 60 percent of Americans 12 and older have been fully immunized.
