Some readers were bowled over by our editorial last week: “Biden in Afghanistan: Drop Dead.” But that title sadly seems more accurate than ever after President Biden’s decision on Tuesday to stick to his arbitrary August 31 deadline for the withdrawal of all U.S. troops from Afghanistan.

Unless you’re Nancy Pelosi or a media fan, there’s no telling what that means. Mr Biden is complying with the Taliban’s demands, reiterated on Tuesday, not to extend the deadline. He rejects advice from G-7 leaders such as Britain’s Boris Johnson and France’s Emmanuel Macron to stay longer to get more people out of the country safely. And he is abandoning thousands of Afghans who fought with the United States and NATO at the mark of Taliban retaliation.

There was an alternative. Mr Biden could have sent enough military forces to provide safe zones and recover stranded Americans and Afghan allies. He could have done it with a NATO coalition of the willing. The US military has 31 active-duty combat brigades of several thousand soldiers each.

He could have told the Taliban that the United States is not negotiating on the deadline and that American forces will stay as long as it takes to complete the mission to rescue our people. It would have saved some honor and credibility from the botched withdrawal.

Instead, Mr. Biden negotiated with the Taliban from a weak position. He sent too few troops to protect Kabul airport and recover our allies. He sent his CIA director to negotiate with the Taliban, who adopted Mr Biden’s August 31 deadline and rejected William Burns’ pleas.
