There are also concerns about refugees flocking to Iran, Pakistan and Turkey.

Canada said last week it would resettle more than 20,000 Afghans from groups it considers likely Taliban targets, including prominent women, human rights activists and LGBTQ people.

Editors of the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Washington Post called on Biden to help evacuate Afghan journalists who had contributed to newspaper coverage in the region. In a joint letter released Monday, the editors called on Biden to “act urgently” to protect the safety of journalists and their families who “are trapped in Kabul, their lives in danger.”

Reacting to the weekend’s events which left hundreds of Afghans desperately chasing military jets as the administration transported the Americans to safety, Biden called the situation “heartbreaking” and said he was “deeply saddened by the facts we are now facing”.

But he has repeatedly directed his anger at Afghan political leaders, saying he urged them in vain to engage in genuine diplomacy.

“This advice has been categorically refused,” he said.

Mr Biden again vowed to save thousands of Afghans who had helped Americans during the two-decade conflict, but the fate of many who remained in Kabul and other parts of Afghanistan was uncertain Monday. And thousands of Afghans with dual U.S. citizenship remain missing amid reports of revenge attacks by the Taliban as they took control.

The president acknowledged criticism that the administration did not act quickly enough to evacuate the Afghans who served as interpreters and others. But he said the Afghan government had discouraged a mass evacuation, saying it would cause a “crisis of confidence” in the country’s ability to fight the Taliban.

Over the weekend, Mr Biden, who was scheduled to stay on vacation all week, stayed with his family at the presidential retreat in the mountains of Maryland rather than quickly returning to the White House as the situation in Afghanistan s ‘aggravated. In addition to a lengthy statement written on Saturday, the White House released a photo of Mr. Biden, sitting alone at a conference room table at Camp David, as he led a virtual meeting with his foreign policy advisers on a large TV screen.
