The emerging catastrophe in Afghanistan forced the president to cut short a trip to Camp David and respond to a suddenly aggressive press. Amid scenes of desperate Afghans trying to board departing US planes and reports of a number of deaths at the chaotic Kabul airport, the president returns to the White House, where he plans to speak in the East Room at 3:45 p.m. ET on Monday. For the first time in his presidency, he cannot count on a generally friendly media reception.

Scott Whitlock of NewsBusters writing:

Afghanistan’s shocking fall to the Taliban is such a failure that even liberal networks on Monday abandoned Joe Biden’s decision-making (at least for now), calling the president “completely bogus” and executing a Vietnamese “debacle” in Saigon. “

On NBC’s Today, co-host Savannah Guthrie opened the show by saying, “A disaster for her people and a debacle for the Biden administration. A triumphant Taliban storming the presidential palace in Kabul, taking full control of the country.

Guthrie added: “And the Camp David president upheld his decision but came under fire for a botched pullout.” The three networks have eagerly and repeatedly compared the Biden disaster to the fall of Vietnam.

Perhaps the media is unhappy that it was misled last month in the East Room when Mr Biden offered a picture of the situation in Afghanistan that turned out to be totally false. Speaking of Afghan interpreters and others who have assisted US forces, Mr. Biden Recount reporters that “our message to these women and men is clear: there is a home for you in the United States if you wish, and we will be by your side as you stood with us.” It is now clear that many of our friends are alone and in grave danger, trapped inside the country now ruled by the Taliban.

Mr Biden offered further false statements to the gathered media, according to the following excerpts from the official White House transcript:

Q Is a Taliban takeover of Afghanistan now inevitable?

PRESIDENT. – No, this is not the case.

Q Why?

THE CHAIRMAN: Because you – the Afghan troops have 300,000 well equipped men – as well equipped as any army in the world – and an air force against some 75,000 Taliban. It is not inevitable.

… Do I trust the Taliban? No. But I have confidence in the capacity of the Afghan army, which is better trained, better equipped and more re-competent in terms of the conduct of war.

Mr. Biden was also specifically asked about a scenario like the one the world is currently witnessing:
