In the fear-filled days after the Taliban assault on Kabul, she was hailed as the brave young woman who interviewed one of the activists live on television, giving hope that Afghan women would not lose all their freedoms. .

But a few days later, like others who feared the wrath of the activists, Behishta Arghand, a former presenter of Tolo News, fled the country, landing with his parents and four siblings in a sparsely furnished villa in a walled complex on the outskirts of Doha, Qatar.

In an interview, Ms Arghand, 24, spoke proudly of her interview and said she hoped the Taliban would honor their vows to allow more openness than when they ruled the country before the invasion of the states- United 20 years ago.

“We don’t have a government now,” she said. “We just hope they do what they promise. But now everyone is afraid of the Taliban.

Ms Arghand recalled the shock she felt when she learned that the Taliban had entered Kabul and the fear that gripped the Afghan capital the next day. Still, she said, she got down to work to take stock of the role of women in public life.

“I wanted to show the Taliban that we want to work,” she said. “We want to be in the media. It is our right in society.

Ms Arghand said she was presenting the news on August 17 when she sensed there was a guest in the studio. She soon realized that it was Mawlawi Abdulhaq Hemad, a member of the Taliban media team.

She only had a few moments to prepare.

Her producers, she said, told her to try to extract information without challenging her guest. But once on the air, she did it anyway, inquiring about information that the Taliban had said. searched from house to house in the city.

After the interview, her phone was inundated with messages from friends and relatives who were both proud and terrified that she had questioned her guest so directly.

Soon after, she and her family fled, fearing that staying in Kabul would be too dangerous.

Ms. Arghand now lives in a house with no television or internet. She doesn’t know how long she will be there. She doesn’t know where she will go next.

But she dreams of going home one day to help women.

“If I’m alive I’ll do a lot for my house,” she said. “My country needs my generation.
