The biographer David ritz wrote about this distance in “Respect,” his second book on Franklin, saying, “Despite my determination to be a compassionate listener, someone whose gentle persistence would allow him to reveal all his sacred secrets, my technique no ultimately did not work. In the end, I didn’t make a hole in his armor.

Thinking more about his first biography, “Aretha: From These Roots,” which he wrote based on interviews with Franklin, and which therefore had his blessing, he said: “She got the book she wanted to. To this day, Aretha considers her book to be an accurate portrayal.

Franklin’s imprint is also throughout the movie “Respect”. She chose Hudson, a move that put music at the center of the film, but risked the appearance that Hudson’s portrayal might be too dependent on Franklin’s own self-image. In other words, as well as the music sounds (and it sounds so very, very good), the plot holes about his past, which seemed to inform a lot of his character’s decision-making, didn’t kept harassing me as I watched.

Why did her mother, Barbara (Audra McDonald), leave her children with her domineering husband, Reverend CL Franklin (Forest Whitaker), only to appear, after her death, as an angelic force in Aretha’s life?

Why doesn’t Aretha remember having to run up to the roof and sing loudly with her sisters when they were children in order to stifle her parents’ fights?

And what a shame does the movie keep hinting at, but, like Aretha, never wants to face?

What does she need music for to save her?
