And at least nine states, many of which have Republican governors, have mask warrants banned or canceled in schools. President Biden tries to to intervene. And the faculty members of public universities in some of these states are lobby for broader security measures.

In Texas, Governor Greg Abbott is locked in a bitter argument with local school districts who openly challenge his order. Now parents of young disabled children are suing him, arguing that the ban prevent their children from going to school safely.

In Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis has threatened to suspend funding schools that require masks. The largest districts in the states defied his order and voted to require them anyway.

A recent survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation found that 63% of parents wanted masks in schools for unvaccinated people.

Oregon, California, Washington state, Hawaii and New Jersey will require vaccines for teachers, although the rules vary. All of them have Democratic governors. Staff from the country’s three largest districts – New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago – will also need to be vaccinated, although these specificities also vary.

But, as with masks, at least 15 Republican-led states have banned vaccination warrants, according to NASHP, although full FDA approval of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine could make some of these laws questionable.

For students, that’s another story. Although anyone aged 12 and over in the United States can be vaccinated, many eligible children have not yet received a single dose. And although schools host vaccination clinics, persuading some parents is not easy. A small neighborhood, Culver City, California, has insisted on vaccines for older students.
