THE VELVET WAS AT NIGHT, by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. (Del Rey, $ 28.) Extremely satisfying, refreshing, and gloriously written, this vibrant noir, set in 1970s Mexico City, traces how a drab secretary at the dawn of 30 Sparks comes to life thanks to the demise of her beautiful and glamorous neighbor. “Moreno-Garcia blends Anglocentric genres with mid-century Mexican history, resulting in a fragrant brew of love, heartbreak, violence, music and unsettling terror,” writes Sarah Weinman in her latest column on the crime. “That things don’t end well is inevitable – it’s dark, after all. But the gift of this book, and Moreno-Garcia’s storytelling, is how it imbues this hackneyed genre with added strength, grace, and even musicality.

ALL THE FREQUENT PROBLEMS OF TODAY: The true story of the American woman at the heart of the German resistance to Hitler, by Rebecca Donner. (Small, brown, $ 32.) Part biography, story and thriller, this book tells the story of author’s idealistic but doomed great-great-aunt, Mildred Harnack, who, between 1932 and 1942, helped build a network of objectors. in Berlin who hoped to stop the Nazis. “Donner quotes extensively from his sources, leaving the reader to dwell on the facts rather than run through them at a gallop,” writes Madeleine Schwartz in her review. “The archival quality of the book, its enumeration and cataloging of sources, is both surprising for a biography – too rarely a place of literary innovation – and touching. It gives a sense of the distorted timeline of the crisis, of how life can change overnight without moving at all, of how change can ricochet from the political sphere to the smallest and most mundane details. of a person’s life.

ALL I HAVE IS YOURS: A marriage, by Eleanor Henderson. (Flatiron, $ 27.99.) “These are confusing times for a woman who loves a struggling man,” Henderson writes in this unflinching memoir about her husband’s long and bewildering medical condition. She tells their story with the attention to detail of a novelist and the honesty of a trusted friend. “Yes, ‘All I have is yours’ is a close look at a macabre and amorphous disease,” writes Elisabeth Egan in her latest Group Text column. “But it is also a love story and a family story, told by an accomplished novelist … Even if you are as disgusted and uncharitable as I am, the generosity of Henderson’s memoirs will melt your icy heart.

NEW UNDER THE SUN, by Alexandra Kleeman. (Hogarth, $ 28.) Kleeman’s novel is an unlikely amalgamation of climate horror story, film industry satire, and made-for-television mystery, following a restless writer who came to Los Angeles for a film adaptation from her novel starring a tragic teenage star. “Kleeman’s dystopia is slowly revealing itself, normalcy curdling in the boil,” writes Matthew Schneier in his review. “The emergency varieties – ecological, psychological, familial, medical – are the half-hidden subject of Kleeman’s novel, burning on the outskirts of what begins as a modestly detached rollick through Hollywood and its empty promises.”

THE RISE AND FALL OF OSAMA BEN LADEN, by Peter Bergen. (Simon and Schuster, $ 30.) Meticulously documented, fluidly written, and teeming with fascinating detail, Bergen’s book weaves its way between man and terrorist, providing the most comprehensive picture we have yet of Osama bin Laden. Along the way, it’s equally telling about the Americans and their pursuit of him. “Thanks to the bravery of the SEAL team in delaying their departure from Abbottabad to retrieve computers and documents from Bin Laden’s lair after he murdered him, we now have a vast mine of information that was not not previously available, “writes Louise Richardson in her review. “Along with other primary sources, Bergen had access to the 470,000 files taken during the raid, and he uses this material lightly, writing with the lucidity of a seasoned journalist.”
