Welcome. August begins on Sunday, a new month, a good time to set an intention for the weeks to come. There are so many uncertain things that we cannot understand or control at the moment. Doing what we can to add predictability or structure to the days can help things feel a little more cohesive.

Start small. In fact, stay small. Like with create a routine, it doesn’t take much to add structure. For example, you can choose one of these new books coming in August and plan to read, say, 20 minutes a day. It is a small goal, perhaps trivial, but easy to achieve and within your reach.

This month I will watch the documentaries “Woodstock 99: Peace, Love and Rage” about the music festival which has become “a hellish landscape of overflowing porta-pots, hungry and thirsty festival-goers, horrific sexual assaults, arson and even death” and “Enemies of the State”, about Air National Guard veteran Matt DeHart. i plan to finish “My Family and Other Animals” by Gerald Durrell a great recommendation for a comfortable reading from Tina Jordan of the Book Office, and for moving on to the other books in Durrell’s trilogy about her family’s years in Corfu. I have a few exercise challenges that I have set for myself. I am on a good floss streak which I plan to maintain.

These plans are not grandiose. They are not the entirety of a big and exciting life, but rather the scaffolding below. These big projects – to socialize, to travel, to return to work on site – could be in flux because we learn more about the Delta variant. What is not moving? What can you decide to do and then continue? Let these plans create a reliable structure that underpins your days this month.
