I read with concern the Gazette’s recent articles about the dismissal/unappointment of Paulette Kuzdeba, chair of the Hadley Conservation Commission, by the Select Board. The ostensible reason given was that she was not “playing on team Hadley.”

That made me wonder what that phrase “team Hadley,” meant, especially since the commission position involves enforcing the rules and regulations protecting the environment for all of the citizens of Hadley. It sounded like the definition according to the Select Board, as reported in the paper, has to do with a particular way of dealing with a complaint about the process involved in getting a permit completed.

To me that reflects a very subjective view, like “you don’t give me what I want because it may be a violation of a regulation, and I think you are not doing your job or acting as a team player.”

Unfortunately, it seems as though a similar type of issue has come up earlier with regard to the Board of Health and Select Board: a conflict of approach with regard to regulations. Also, according to the paper, another past similar issue occurred around the Hadley Media Oversight Committee and the Select Board.

We are new to Hadley, but this kind of conflict between the Select Board and other individuals trying to do proper civil work, especially when it appears to be experienced by the Select Board as too much independence or a different approach, is very concerning, particularly when it results in removal or demotion of very qualified people, who are also volunteers and committed to their work.

Surely there are better ways for the good citizens of the Select Board to address these conflicts of views and values than dismissal or negative labeling.
