WASHINGTON – Thomas J. Barrack Jr., a longtime fundraiser and friend of Trump, has reached a deal with federal prosecutors to be released on $ 250 million bail pending trial for illegally lobbying the US government on behalf of the leadership of the United Arab Emirates.

The deal, announced Friday, requires Mr. Barrack – a wealthy investor who chaired Mr. Trump’s inaugural committee – to wear a GPS tracking bracelet at all times, according to a Justice Department spokesperson.

The agreement restricts his travel to southern California, where he lives and works, and New York, where he has been charged. It also prohibits Mr. Barrack, who was arrested and detained in Los Angeles Tuesday, to transfer money from its national accounts abroad.

Prosecutors, citing his wealth and access to private jets, said he posed a flight risk and asked for a high bond.

Mr Barrack, 74, is due in Brooklyn federal court on Monday, where he will be brought to justice for acting as an unregistered agent of a foreign power, obstructing justice and lying to the FBI.

His accused colleague and partner, Matthew Grimes, 27, has been released on $ 5 million bail. Mr. Grimes is also required to wear an electronic surveillance device and is subject to a 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew.

Mr. Grimes is not allowed to speak with Mr. Barrack except in the presence of lawyers, according to the Department of Justice.

Rashid al-Malik Alshahhi, an Emirati businessman close to UAE rulers, has also been indicted, but left the country after being questioned by federal agents three years ago. His lawyer said in a statement on Friday: “His efforts have been investigated by the office of the special counsel, with which he has fully cooperated. He never saw himself as an “agent” for any country. He is devastated that anyone could even think he was engaging in something illegal.

The seven-count indictment unveiled this week accused Mr Barrack of using his access to President Donald J. Trump to advance the UAE’s foreign policy objectives and then misleading many takeovers from federal agents.

Federal prosecutors said Mr. Barrack used his position as an outside adviser to Mr. Trump’s campaign to publicly promote the UAE’s agenda while soliciting guidance, comment and talking points from senior Emirati officials.

Once Mr. Trump was elected, they said, Mr. Barrack invited senior Emirati officials to give him a “wish list” of foreign policy actions they wanted Washington to take in the first 100 days. , Mr. Trump’s first six months and first year. term, and at the end of it, prosecutors said.

Mr Barrack is the latest in a long line of former Trump collaborators, fundraisers and associates to face criminal charges. The former president’s company, the Trump Organization, and its chief financial officer were indicted this month for state fraud and tax charges.
